Chains along with some weight over the back wheels will help quite a bit. Only downside is they're a PITA to put on and take off.

I drove a warmed over, punched 5.0 Merc Capri through backwoods winters in Atlantic Canada without tirechains. Chances are you could live without them in Illinois surburbia.

They're illegal in Minnesota--THE winter state in the continental US--and we get along okay. Studded tires are illegal here too. I supposed if everyone used chains and studded tires they'd have to redo the roads every year... not that they shouldn't since normal winter conditions creates billions of potholes in the spring anyway.

I see that you're in Chicago... there aren't any mountains in Chicago. Treacherous mountain areas are about the only time you actually need them. You can get along without them just fine.

They sometimes are obligatory for certain roads in the Alps and it's not hard to figure out why :) But they're a waste of paving if the road isn't covered with snow and ice.

They are also required under certain conditions in the Rockies. The cops will stop you if you don't have them.

Right now there's a layer of ice under the snow in Chicago because it's gotten colder after the warmstreak (hence, the melted snow freezing) and it is snowing on top of it . . ..

Stop freaking out about it - they'll just salt the roads, you big weenie.
