No. We do not need church attendance to be made mandatory for any reason. I say this not only as a Christian, but as a Roman Catholic Christian. We've seen the days where the state worked hand in hand with pardoners and summoners. It is a clear violation of the separation of church and state. My own church's history is exhibit A of why we need such a separation.
Furthermore, tea party idiots like that give us Christians a bad name. I used to be a "died in the wool" -type conservative. As I get older, I have come to the realization that Conservatism and Christianity are fundamentally incompatible. When people say things like the OP has quoted, it only makes that belief of mine further solidify.
