I wouldn't say they are completely worthless. I remember filling out a petition regarding a sports team that made it into a newspaper and became news. Also, there was a petition online during election season threatening to never buy products from the sponsers of some show if they aired the certain incorrect show about John Kerry. Regardless of what you think about that, I think they can do some good.
