Background:
I'm a high school science teacher at a k-12 private school. The high school students finish their exams and leave on Friday, June 15. Per my contract, I am required to stay until the end of the month. Thus, the reason for my letter.

It seems professional enough. My biggest concern is that I might be missing something important.

Dear Principal:

I would like to inform you that I am resigning from my teaching position following June 15, 2007. This coincides with the last day of Final Examinations for the High School students.

Thank you for the professional and personal growth that this work environment has provided for me.

I will prepare all the necessary paperwork and grading and hand them into the office before I leave. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help with the transition.

As I will not attend the end-of-year meetings and evaluations, I would also like to request a meeting with you, to discuss all such matters.

Sincerely,

The Chort

There's not much else to it. Unless you're concerned about burning bridges, you can just send him a letter that says "I Quit".

I'm sure he'll let you know if there's anything else he needs...

Seems good enough for me. Short, to the point, lays it out and doesn't provide any fodder for them to complain about in the future...good work.

Where are you headed next?

Isn't the rule of thumb to put almost nothing on the resignation letter? Usually one sentance saying "I resign from whatever".

You might want to delete the space in your name since your username has no space.

Thanks guys.
I'm starting medical school in the fall (well, actually late summer), and I'm planning a couple major trips this summer.
With school starting in mid august, that doesn't leave me much time, so I figured I would use the "dead" time I have in June.

btw, one of the things I'm planning is to bike the Pacific Coast of the US. :D

Don't they already know that you're starting med school? Seems like something they should know.

Bike from where to where.

I'm gonna take a train from LA (my home) to somewhere north (Portland or Seattle depending on time constraints) and then bike back.
That way it feels more like I have a destination ... a purpose ;)

Isn't a teaching position a pretty frickin secure career? I wish you the best of luck though.

Doctor is a little better. From what I hear people don't like dying (most at least).

Forget dying, people don't like having a fever and a cough.

As to the OP: The letter if fine, except i'd sign it with my real name instead of my AT username.

I'd leave off that last sentence about wanting him to meet with you to go over the end of the year stuff. That time of year is a busy one for principals and he or she might not want to have to find time to go over those things with you just because you don't want to hang around to do it at the scheduled time.

Good luck with your bike ride and medical school.
