on one of my pcs (laptop), win2k crashed, and last known config. was useless. since i did not have a ERD, I reran win2k off its cd.
it would copy the compressed data to the c:, but after the usual reboot, it would not continue.
I did a scandisk, kept on finding problems, allowed it to fix them. this went for a few hours.
reran win2k cd, but this time got some weird message that a file or a 'null' was missing from the cd, contact administrator.
Decided to uses winXP Prof.
at about the same stage, got another similar 'missing' kind of message.
I gave up for that evening, and did a 'dir' on this HD.
It showed 15GB free out of 20... and the only folder was a sort of %winnt% folder.
no programfiles, no nothing.
did the mbr get corrupted and dir cannot list the dir tree?
did scandisk mess everything up?
would my data probably still be in the drive? i mean, no format / fdisk was run on it.
i could just use some file recovery program perhaps?
but i wouldnt want to get it if it is a lost cause.
thanks.
