I've heard a ton of stories, and who knows which (if any) is correct?

-It is a reality tv show, only they don't know they're on TV.
-It is a research project, which is close to the first theory.
-It is all created by Walt's imagination.
-It is purgatory, and the survivors are paying for their sins before they can move on.
-It is a non-sensical flash of brain waves right before the plane crashes, a la An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.
-Your own suggestion.

dude Amborse Bierce!!! lol i have a book of his short stories on my desk right next to one of my speakers....... I don't think it's #1, cause that's too extreme for reality tv...the others are all feasable.....the purgatory thing seems to religious for TV....so the others, the project, walts' mind, and the brain waves thing could be true....or they really did just crash....lol

Its a secret military base that the survivors just happened to crash on. This is only from seeing 2 episodes of it this season though

Interesting facts:
108 = 4 + 8 + 15 + 16 + 23 + 42
Websites exist for the airline of the crashed plane, the lottery that Hurley won, and several other organizations created in the show.
Eko (The name of the black dude in the other group of survivors) was once the name of the capital of Nigeria.. during the slave trade era.
When the "Others" walked by in the most recent episode, several of the pairs of legs were repeated.. this was obviously done for a reason.
108 is an important number in the Hindu religion.

My favorite explanation was that it is Pandora's Box, but I very much doubt it's anything at all really spiritual, as they said everything has a logical explanation, and even though I am a religious person, most of the world doesn't define anything spiritual as logical.

For a while, I was kind of stuck on the theory that they had landed in the original garden of eden, but I have long since abandoned that theory.

mystery lets em explore character drama, and they will milk it as long as they can. whether it pays off is another matter. alias didthis for a long time with rambaldi and it was dissapointing in the end after all the run arounds to keep the mystery going yet another season.

This is where my money is since it's the "easy" way to end the series.

Think about it: by the end of the series, the producers will have milked Lost for all of its worth, won't give a rat's ass about ratings (since they'll be below sustainability), and won't care much about profits since they've already released past seasons on DVD which sold really well.

It's not this. The producers have said so many times. This is too easy and a cliche.
