what do you think is causing this lockup?

lets just say i have done everything imaginable, everything bios, drivers, settings, memory etc... ALL games will lock up within a few seconds of starting them, UNLESS..... i set monitor refresh rate to 70, at 75 i get lockups. Monitor always played ok on 75 before i added this powercolor ati 9000/128, and video card did ok for awhile at 75 at that. now it wont do 75 in games but anything else is ok at 75 or above.
Monitor does support 75@1024x768 its a Princton EO700

NOW ill throw another whench in the machinery, this only happens with D3D games, OGL games run fine.. Sooooo, video card? monitor? idea's?

Prolly vid card. The degenerative nature of it is likely a buildup of dust reducing cooling efficiency.

Okay, i have switched hard drives, format and fresh install of both 98 SE and XP pro, same results.
have upgraded bios and tweeks all its settings, same results.
Have run mem test, no errors, changed memory, same results.
have tried certified and hacked ati drivers from orginal ATI cd thru 3.6, same results
DX from 7.xxxx thru 9.0b, same results
removed all but video card fortesting, same results.
moved memory to diff. slot, same...

tried everything on ATi control panel, results are hardlockup, blue screen, game freezes with sound still playing, jumps back to desktop, all depends on what i change as to what it does.
card is clean and has a decent fan on it, computer fans are working and inside is within limits for heat.
AMd 1800 cpu, 512 meg stick Kingston 2700/cas 2.5 memory

specs:
ata 100 Maxtor and ata 133 maxtor hard drives for test.
new Antec 400 watt PSU
Asus A7V8X motherboard.

as i said, ogl games seem fine at any rez. Q3 and Q3team
d3d games (all) lockup soon after starting Unless monitor res. is set to 70 or below, have tried UT03, max payne mostly, both of which ran fine when i first built this computer.

Now with res. set to 70 or optimal, i can play d3d for about 30 minutes before a lockup,reboot...
blue screen messages mostly say a VXD driver is at fault.

problem is testing another video card isnt a option as all that is around here and in friends computers are the old 3,3 volt cards that wont fit my 8x 1.5 volt agp slot, so to test i would have to buy a crad and right now i havent extra cash to do that. Im thinking about a Nv Ti4200 to replace the Ati (powercolor) 9000/128 4x card when i can, this would be a improvment wouldnt it? I am not that concerned about the absolute best picture quality either, or the highest benchmarks (my card has nothing to prove) 🙂 i just want STABILITY!!!!!

I agree - kinda sounds heat related? Is the fan on your ATI spinning?

Yes the fan is working fine, however after reading another post with about the same problems, i did what he did and bumped the AGP voltage from 1.5 to 1.7, and guess what............... no lockups at all.
Sooooooooo, wonder how this works, sub standard/failing part on card needed more current? motherboard bios was lying about the 1.5 voltage and its really only about 1.5 now?
I ran UT03 and Max payne each for a half hour at Max settings and feeling the mem and gpu on the card after and it feels no hotter than it did any other time.
I guess we will see down the road if something on the vid card is failing, but least i can play a few games till it does, need to upgrade anyway and least this is a good excuse right?
Oh, i forgot to mention before, the screen on my monitor would also shake, meaning sorta grow larger and shrink approx. 1/8 to 1/4 inch back and forth after starting computer and would eventually quit, now it doesnt do that at all/

What kind of power supply are you using? If it's a generic one could be wasn't giving enough juice so upping the agp voltage helped. Check what your voltages are with MBM or from the
bios if possible.
