Just sold off my M&K S-150 system. I loved those speakers...

Best system I ever installed was a B&W Nautilus system. Four Krell FPB-600 amps. Wadia CD player. Krell CAST pre-amp. B&W Nautilus speakers...

$120,000 audio system. It was a religous experience.

I have heard from many that B&W is the best.

People can make arguments about Wilson, Dunleavy, Magnapan, Revel... But that Nautilus system we installed was the best aural experience I've ever had. Just... absolutely staggering.

B&W.... orgasmic. My friend has the Nautilus speakers.. freaking amazing. I have a cheap B&W system with speakers for only several thousand, but still.. it rocks.

I will second the call for the Martin Logan Statement as the best speakers I have heard.
I believe they were using a VersaDynamics air-bearing turntable, sweet.
If you want something more affordable-find some used Yamaha NS-1000, or NS-2000.
Sealed box three-way speakes with Beryllium midrange and tweeter domes. Better than most $5000 speakers nowadays, you can pick these up used for ~$1000.
If you are willing to do quite a bit of work yourself, you can diy with a kit or a custom design to fit just your needs. Try Madisound, Parts-Express, Zalytron and E-speakers.
You can buy ribbon tweeters, metal domes, composite cone woofers, whatever you want.

Best i've ever heard are Martin Logan CLS IIz. Jaw dropping imaging.
Best I've never heard, the MBL 101E Radialstrahler loudspeaker, but I want to possess them!

I'm currently using Onix Ref 1's. (stand mounted monitors) You can find these for $400 - 600, slightly used or New in Box if you look hard. I don't think these can be beat at this price.
Retail is about $1200 through AV123. And are considered a bargain even at that price. I don't even bother to turn on the sub most of the time with these the easily play down to about 40hz.

I also have NHT 2.5i's (full range floorstanders), power hungry, but no need for a sub. It's a great speaker for Rock/Electronic. The NHT 2.5i, 2.9 or 3.3 can all be had for decent price used (they're out of production).

You can put together a really really nice system if you shop wisely. My first rig was a used vintage Marantz 2238b reciever, used onkyo CD player, used NHT sub and a pair of new PSB Alpha's. For about $400.

I try to buy most of my used gear off of Audiogon.com as audiophiles tend to take very good care of their equipment and usually keep the original boxes. (A safeguard against shipping damage - and ask to double box if you buy).

It is a myth that small subwoofer drivers are "tighter" sounding than larger ones, just so you know. The only reason you prefer the smaller ones due to the differences in FR and the particular alignment of the sub, not the size of the driver.

But for the same amount of money, a smaller driver will likely be of higher quality than a larger one.

But if money isnt a consideration, better to use speakers with big woofers already, and leave the sub to handle the SUB bass.

Well of course if they are different brands/models and at different prices, the difference in size could be more critical. The issue is the quality of the motor. If its a good motor, then a 15 or 18 can be every bit as tight as a 10 or 12...if the motor isn't up to the task, then you get the idea.

And if you're talking about some quality floorstanders with multiple 10s or 12s, sure, but otherwise everyone would benefit from a quality sub which can handle the bass effortlessly, taking the strain off of the mains.

Very nice choices. I'd kill for a 101E as well.

Bowers and Wilkins, it seems, is a lot like Bose and Bang & Oulafsen.

Except slightly more expensive, and you're actually getting a jaw-droppingly good speaker.
