My girlfriend's ex was kind of a tool. He continued to buy her birthday and Christmas gifts even after she dumped him and we had been going out for a year. Finally, after two years, the gifts stopped. :|

Depends on how early you start dating, I guess. If you have a wide variety of friendships over the years, and achieve a decent age before engaging in romantic relationships, I think it's not as chancy as one would think.

I'm glad Josh Harris found something that worked for him, but he writes his book like his way is the only way. I can agree with some of the things he says, but he legislates it, and I find his style to be a pita.

My wife and I both had never really dated anyone. I had a few "it's a summer thing" relationships. We did start dating at 19, and married by 22 though.
