What do you think about religion sects?

Is suicididing yourself to go on a magical UFO in the wake of a comet good for people? Well, if you're idiotic enough to believe in that....maybe you deserved to be removed from the gene pool...

No.
I'll discuss it privately with you if you truly want some answers.
I'll not open myself to the flames that lurk here. 😉

What is your definition of "a sect"?

You might as well ask, "What do you think about religions?" Personally, I loathe organized religion. I think it causes more trouble than it helps.

I'm new here and this is probably not the best way to introduce myself...

But I'm nothing if not brave...

I put up with a lot of crap for growing up Catholic in the South. Whenever a Protestant expresses mild disapproval after I tell them I grew up Catholic, I always say "Where else was I gonna meet a nice Italian, Spanish, or Irish boy?". I also got teased by some idiots for being Latina (like that's a problem?). I have heard Catholicism described by some backwoods cretins as a 'modern day cult'. It boggles the mind. I no longer consider myself Catholic (I politely left the church as a teen after I realized I had broken all the rules) but it still irks me that there is still such ignorance and prejudice about different religions and cultures today.

So much of religion is based on your ethnicity/the culture you were raised in. To think one is superior over the other is just another form of bigotry. To this day, I still have to deal with fools that think God is a white male Republican.

The cure for all this? Education. Take a few courses in Sociology before you come to any conclusions. At least you will be well informed.

HHMMmmmmmm... Isla, brave, excommunicated, Latina Catholic who breaks all the rules! Now AnandTech is complete! 😛

Like anything, you have to judge each "sect" on it's own merits. There are some kooky ones like Heavens Gate, but others will one day become part of the mainstream, such as how Pentecostals, Baptists, and Lutherans have. Sects, both good and bad, are always distinguished by their new ideas, but new ideas do not necessarily equate with bad ideas.

So Isla...YOU'RE that other southern Catholic that I kept hearing about back in school. Nice to finally meet you🙂

Personally I believe that whatever religion or belief can bring you closer to happiness and peace in your own life is the right one for you. Though anything that gives away free wine just has to be doing something right...

Whisper,

It's a pleasure to meet you at last! I agree with your philosophy and you couldn't have said it better... 😀

"anything that gives away free wine just has to be doing something right"

Silly Methodists, we use grape juice so the folks from AA and kids can get in on the action, maybe I should look for something different 😉

zonker...if you drive around the back of my church, I'll be sure to see if I can perhaps slip you out a cask or two of sacramental wine. I'm sure no one will really mind so long as you say you're using it to spread the Catholic faith...and keep as straight a face as possible, at least until you drive away🙂

Isla...I actually heard a third Catholic was going to move down here, but he was voted out because he would somehow upset the delicate balance already in place. They didn't want us to have a majority or anything, hehe.
