The first thing I think of with Italy is the wonderful Gelato. Probably worth the trip for it.

When I went to Venice, I was thinking, 'I look forward to trying various Italian dishes, the real thing, to see what they're like.'

The first thing I had was Gelato. Then my reaction was, 'all I want to eat in Italy is this. Eating anything else would take space from Gelato'.

I confess, at the big square, with big crowds on tour, I had a bag of bird food and by throwing a handful at the feet of the back of crowds, it cause hundreds of pigeons to swarm them. It might be the most fun thing to do in Venice, as childish as it is. I'm not proud of it.

What stuck out to me about Italy is how unique its culture still is. Most places are blends of global brands, all with a lot of similarity. Italy was pretty much all Italian.

That wasn't always pleasant, and I felt a big relief leaving Venice for the south of France, but I really liked the different culture of Venice.

"I hope you keep it refrigerated. Otherwise it will spoil."

Italian blood can't be refrigerated, always hot blooded.

If I was rich, Get Ferrari
Drive Stelvio Pass
Drive The Amalfi Coast

I am not rich, some day, visit Italy, rent an Alpha, Drive the best roads...

Until I see for myself, I will probably under-rate it.

Land of vituperative lushes. Purveyor of low-quality autos and firearms. Hasn't amounted to much recently. Just hanging on amidst relics of past glory.

I bet the food's good though. And the Mediterranean vistas.

When someone brings up Italy mostly what I think is "Oh I remember. There's a place called Italy somewhere in the world. Why am I craving spaghetti right now? Seems kind of random".

Nah, I choose life.
honestly it's a great road trip. It costs less than Italy and the food and landscape are great.
The bullet holes in the buildings leave an impression but I guess they've decreased further in the last few years.

I wonder what american ice cream tastes like since americans rave about any ice cream bought in Italy.

Napoli is the filthiest place I've ever seen honestly. They just throw trash in the street. As in they actually throw their old mattresses out in the street and they're done.
Beirut right now can probably beat it. Still, tunisia was cleaner than Naples.
Also the traffic on the coast near Naples is the worst ever.

If you want to visit the south I'd rather go to Sicily, especially in the spring when it's all green and you see why any civilization (greeks, romans, arabs, normans) wanted it. You absolutely have to rent a car there, forget about public transport. The roads are all new and free because of pork barrelling so the driving is nice.
There's interesting old stuff to see, you can find anything from the greek era to the architecture of the '800.
Salento is nice too. I've never seen Calabria, or the interior mainland parts.

well I agree that naples traffic is the worst in the world that I have seen. Man if you can drive in naples you should get some kind of medal.
I remember as a kid seeing tourists pull over downtown and freak the fuck out because they thought they almost died. A red light means you can go and a green light means you better watch out for someone driving past at 100 kph in a panto..

er I mean toplino...

anyhooo the trash problem in naples is better than it was in the 90s early 2000s when the strike and the ensuing beurocratic mess brought trash collection to a standstill. Now its no differnt than brooklyn or parts of the bronx.

I used to live in the bronx and I cant tell you how many times a diaper was thrown out of a window down on top of people walking by.

Trash is a universal problem though people in naples seem to do everything very dramatically. I have not been back to naples in the last six years since my triplets were born.

if you guys are ever close enough to naples try to go. The pizza and the mozzarella are worth the trip alone.

heres Rick Steves on Positano.
