Here's my situation: I'm a student on a budget that wants a laptop. I don't plan to game on my laptop (except for strategy games like Civilization III) so I don't really need a fast CPU. I want it to be portable with good battery life because I want to be able to use it on the go... As far as budget is concerned, I can spend up to 1600-1700 for it but of course, cheaper is better! I never owned a laptop before but I know I want one that is well built because I'm kinda hard on some of my things (when you take your bus/subway you sometimes have to run and it's always crowded there). I looked for those new Centrino based laptops but it's much too expensive for me now. I don't plan to buy it now, only in 2-3 months to let new and cheaper Centrino based laptops in the market. What do you think I should keep an eye on? All I really want is a CDRW drive (DVD would be nice too but it's not that important), a wireless network card would be nice too, 384 or 512 megs of RAM to let WinXP run smoothly.

Thanks for your help

I would recommend the toshiba satellite

It is far below budget, so you'll have extra money for more important things.

A bit on the big side, but it has wireless internet, a DVD/CD-RW drive, and a decent video card and processor as well.

Thanks for the replies guys the Thinkpad A31 seems to be very interesting ! For the Toshiba, it's good but the 2.5 hours battery life scares me...
