I disagree with you on almost everything, but here's finally something I completely agree with.
My family has been active with farm animals (namely steers) for many years, so I've spent tremendous amounts of time at the fair. I've done record-keeping for livestock auctions at county fairs. Some of the people that go to fairs are "average"... but the vast majority aren't. IMO my siblings and a few of our friends are, and the rest of the people in the animal barns aren't.

We all (usually) avoid the rides, not because of the rides or the operators, but the freaks that can't get enough of them.
But yeah... the traditional "fair food" that'll kill you inside of a minute... best stuff ever.
