What do you say?

My company hired another company to do some work on one of my properties. In the course of doing the work, the contractor had a terrible accident and one of his employees lost his hand.

I feel terrible that this happened and would like to convey my sympathy to the man and his family but I am a loss as to how to express my feelings. I don?t know this guy personally, and don?t know if it would be appropriate to visit him in the hospital, or if I did what would I say?

Any advice?

Yeah, I'd stay out of it... Accidents happen. I imagine turning up at the hospital is gonna be awkward as hell for everyone involved.

"what is the sound of one hand clapping?"

it is probably not appropriate to visit him. would he even know who you are?

I'm not worried about that. Where I live the workers compensation program (like OSHA) makes it next to impossible for someone to sue a third party. He would lose all support from the system if he tries to sue. It also is apparent that he was entirely at fault himself for the accident.

This is how I feel. I feel bad it happened while he was working on my property, but I have no idea what I would say to him or his wife.

In all seriousness, I'm terrible at these situations. Strangly enough, at lunch today my waitress had just lost a finger earlier that week in a freak kitchen accident.

Somebody at the table asked her what she did to her hand (it was all bandaged up) and she told us. An awkward silence fell over the table.

I am the same way, I always feel really awkward. I always hoped I would be able to joke about something like that if it happened to me without coming off creepy like Buster Bluth.

my mom worked for social security for years, and had to be the one to decline a truck driver that lost his arm in a rollover accident that wasnt his fault... she was joking with us about him asking "what kind of job can i get with one hand?" her first thought was "traffic control on a one-way street?"

i always liked that story.

Like it was posted above, would he even know who you were? Its nice that you feel sorry for him but I agree that it would seem odd you sending something or showing up.

If you don't mind me asking, how did it happen?

No, he wouldn't know me. He knows my company, but I have never met him personally.

As for how it happened; have you seen the movie Fargo with the wood chipper?

If you sent flowers that is probably good enough since you didnt know him personally. Most people would not even bother with this, so it will probably have a positive effect.
