Vanity can get expensive.

That's why cosmetics exist; that, and to protect male optic nerves from shriveling ugliness. ;)

My buddy who is 33 uses that Nioxin or whatever and he says it works OK for him.
He doesn't hvae much growing back but he says its thicker hair and he isn't losing any. He ran out and a month went by befor he knew it and was amazed how quick he back slid.
He doesn't use ALL the stuff they recommend just the shampoo.

<< Has anyone had success with any treatment for thinning hair? >>

Yep. I have a great solution! It costs nothing and is guaranteed to work. What is this marvelous product? Acceptance.

Kudos to all you men who choose acceptance!!!!

I have said it before and I will say it again....

Many women find it sexy.

Don't buy into media hype about what you should look like! I bet if a study was done, it would show that men probably never even thought about hair loss before the days of Dick Clark and MTV!

Before television, I bet it was a badge of honor to start losing your hair.

I hate the way the media makes us feel we have to look and be.

Ladies would tell you that shaving will make the hair grow back thicker, but I think we are too smart for that. Why can't they just shave that moustache off instead of flaunting it in my face that theirs is thicker than mine?

Has anyone considered a water softener? I read a long time ago that the problem was minerals blocking the follicle... but this is hard to believe, and we would be perspiring minerals anyway...just a thought.

On the radio here they were talking about some type of sperm shampoo that helps reverse baldness. It seems if this was the case female porn stars would have lots of hair everywhere.

Speaking from experience (Why do you think I chose that icon ;) )....

Acceptance, by far is the best approach in the long run. It was a "little" tough for me too, even though I kept mine cut in a 1/4" "high and tight flattop" for 8 years. At some point, you just can't do it anymore... :)

Anyway, I simply chose to say "What the hey..". I cut mine with a "000" clipper, which is almost like shaving it, though less trouble. And ZERO maintenance.... That's nice!

What I NEVER wanted to become was one of those guys that did the "comb-over" thing (You ever see that dude Benny Hinn on the religious network..... geez it's embarrassing.... can't listen to him for being distracted by that pathetic and vain attempt at a comb-over.)

Nor did I want to do the "rug" thing, and definitely not the implant thing.....

As far as attracting women.... I am not, nor have I ever been a particularly attractive man. But even if I had been, I would much prefer to be with a women who was more interested in what's IN my head (and heart) rather than on top of it. :) Maybe I'm wrong. After all, I am....

Opinionated :)

madthumbs- Do you remember where you read that article about water softeners?

I had made that correlation on my own. I had ALWAYS had a water softener until about 24 months ago. I quit using it because I couldn't afford it at the time.

About a year ago I tried to figure out what (besides genetics) could be causing my hair loss--which had begun about 6-8 months prior.

The only change in my life was my stopping use of the water softener.

It may be a coincidence...but who knows?

God...

You guys are brutal...

Edprush, you are lucky and unfortunate at the same time. Today, more treatments exist for treating thinning hair, but none of them is a panacea.

I've had thinning hair for about 8 years. I've fought it and had moderate success. Unfortunately, moderate is about all you can hope for, but there are some great treatments on the horizon. Some are already available outside the US, and the others should be available within 2-5 years, after FDA approval.

To sum it up...

Rogaine - I call this "bad hair in a bottle". Minoxodil (sp?) in an alcohol solution. What happens why you put alcohol on something? It dries it up, and therefore leaves it difficult to maintain. Its results are very limited, and less than 50% of people actually respond to it. Plus it only helps in the crown or "bald spot" area, people who are losing hair up front get no gain from it.

Propecia - A man only pill, right now it is the best drug currently "on the market", though there are better ones that are not approved yet. Propecia is pricey, about 50$ a month, however, it in my opinion is worth it. It won't grow a ton of hair back, but it will at least slow you loss, and in some cases stop and reverse it all together. Propecia with Neutrogena shampoo is the best thing out right now, but you do need a prescription.

???? - There is a drug on the horizon that has had *AMAZING* results with hair regrowth, however, it is in fact a high blood pressure treatment medicine. Somehow, as a side effect, it sponsors massive hair regrowth (I don't know if that includes like palms-of-hands and backs or what). Recently talking to my doctor (since you need a prescription for propecia) he talked about it, but he wouldn't even tell me the name, for fear of a 'black-market' on the drug. What he said is that they are working finding out if they can separate the blood pressure part and the hair growth part. Taking high blood pressure medication when you don't have high blood pressure is a no-no, so don't expect this drug on the market until they can figure out what is going on. 2-5 yrs away on this one.

The two other options are medical hair replacement and non-medical 'rugs'. These are decisions you have to come to late in the game.

My suggestion is use propecia/neutrogena. Stick it out until the 'miracle' drug gets approved and becomes available. I stay keen on the issues since baldness is in my family, and fighting it early makes more sense than paying lots of money later on for treatments. Good Luck!
