I put general thing in my google talk status like away, grad school, work etc,

at work its either online, away, or off. Keep it simple.

I don't bother doing anything with my personal accounts, I'm either there or I'm not. My friends don't need to know everything about me at all times.

At work, I'll set my IM to "away, but in the office", "lunch", or "at home" so people know my status and don't try to find me if I'm not there.

we use a corporate IM client in my company.

it can be helpful if my coworkers know if I'm away because I'm grabbing a cup of coffee from the kitchen, running out to grab lunch and will be back in half an hour, or have left for the day but left myself signed in.
