in trying to combat illegal modded old dish recievers, they close that loophole by changing to a different encryption; but it opens an alternate way for people with free-to-air receivers (namely pansat) to get their programs for free.

some FTA models which at the moment I believe would be the Pansat 2700a/3500

but google is your friend. ;)

i have no experience with it because i'm too lazy. i was researching regular free-to-air programming and stumbled upon that.

According to people on AVSForum they're not even sending true MPEG4 now, just MPEG2 with a MPEG4 header, essentially causing you to buy a new receiver for no reason at all.

forgot to mention that people shouldn't do this in the states as it is highly illegal. if you live in canada, feel free.

it is also a desperate atempt to catch up to cable providers who have far more bandwith availible to them.

Really??? I didn't think any FTA IRD had MPEG4 support. Only PCI DVB-S cards can potentially support MPEG4 without any upgrades.

I *think* he meant the move to Nagra2 was to combat piracy, which makes mpeg4 crappy.

Nope, only HDTV FTA content is the DVB-S cards. No FTA receivers (pansat sucks btw... viewsat and coolsat are much better) are capable of HDTV atm.

Yup. And DVB-S cards only support QSPK modulation. Dish Network is using 8SPK modulation. So my above comment about supporting MPEG4 is moot until SDTV channels are transmitted this way.

In the mean time, I'll continue to enjoy over 30 HDTV channels on BEV with my 1020a card :)

Sort of related - Does Dish STILL not have local HDTV channels available?
