You need a wireless Router/access point that connects to your cable modem and your main PC (@$80 lately with deals and rebates)

You need a PCMCIA wireless card for the laptop. (@$30-$50 depending on the deals available).

I want to buy 802.11b equipped lap top.

Can I just buy wireless USB or PCI card for my desktop and not use Access point?

I'm not 100% sure, but you may be able to do this using Win2k or XP and ICS (internet connection sharing). Again, I'm not 100% sure this can be done, you would be better served posting or researching this in networking.
