What do you need to rent a car?

Well i need a car since i wrecked mine last night. I have only rented a car in Costa Rica, never in the states. How much available credit do i need on my credit card? Any suggestions for finding the cheapest rates? I am trying to deal with my car insurance company so i cant call around... Thanks in advance.

thrifty, dollar, and enterprise rent to those under 25. Thrifty and Dollar charge extra($15/day and $20/day, respectively). Enterprise does not charge extra, but does not allow you to rent any category higher than full size.

A few years ago when I rented cars, here's what they always requested:

Valid and current drivers license.
Proof of insurance (or you can purchase their insurance).
Another piece of ID (I used my social security card)
Credit card (no debit cards allowed)
3 personal references who are NOT related to you, they called all of them before renting the car.
Employer info (this was also verified, they did call my employer)

After I passed all those, we inspected the car, I signed some forms, they gave me the keys and that was it.

I guess it depends on where you live. I rented a Corolla last year from a toyota dealership here in California. I was 23 at the time.

Im in school fulltime, does it matter that I technically dont have a job? (i.e. under the table work).

It was my first time ever renting a car, I was over 21 but under 25.

Enterprise Rent a Car.

I only rented through them because no other national chain would rent to under 25 year olds and the Dodge Neon was a bargain ($39 a weekend day).

I don't think they check your credit report.
I've never had a credit check anyway.
