What do you need to play STALKER Clear Sky maxxed out?

I have a Radeon HD 4850 (512 MB) and I can only play the FPS game STALKER Clear Sky on "high" quality settings, dx 10.1, 0x AA, and sun shadow turned off in order to get a playable framerate. My fps is usually around 40-50 with sun shadows turned off, and <15 fps with sun shadows on. If I tried playing it on it's absolute maximum settings and resolution, I would probably get <10 fps, and my PC would then crash after Two or Three minutes.

Sun shadows make my frame rates go to hell.

Is a Radeon HD 5870 (1GB) capable of playing STALKER Clear Sky on it's maximum settings and still get a playable framerate?

I can play Crysis at comparable settings and still get playable performance.

Off topic, but do they make the HD 5870 in a 2GB model?

My 295 chugs a little at 1920, no AA sun settings medium, ssao medium. The game is CPU limited during battles so a new card won't help much there but will help during the rest of the game. A 5870, and presumably a GTX 480, would be pretty good for it. In DX10 my vram gets filled up, but I am also using clear sky complete which has better textures.

Well the graphics settings themselves might be taxing on video cards, but another major problem this game has is lack of multi-threaded programming for the CPU. This of course, affects ultilization of the video card all things being equal.

Are you using the beta for complete? When is the finished version supposed to drop? I haven't even begun playing clear sky yet hoping that a complete mod would come out, so excited!

I ran Call of Pripyat maxed at 1920x1200 on a i5 750 and 5770, but it was with DirectX 11. No idea how to turn on/off tesselation, but my guess is that it was off.

Benchmarks show DirectX 11 without Tess doing better than DirectX 10, and CoP is probably more optimized.

Where did you get STALKER CoP? I've been to Dozens of electronics stores and I cannot find it for sale anywhere. I heard that it is not sold in stores in the United States. The only place you can buy it is online. Where can I get the English version of the game?

Until earlier this week I had a 4850 1Gb card and Clear Skies was very jerky for me at 1920x1200. I got a 5850 this week and now its smooth. I have sun settings on medium, haven't tried them on high.

Nah it just looks worse. They killed or minimized a lot of the effects, especially the lighting ones.

Yes the test 2 came out a few days ago. Check the Steam forum on complete 2009 for the link. The final version is supposed to be out soon but it is stable now as I played the whole game with it.

Do not compare Clear Sky to Call of Pripyat. The latter runs far better then Clear Sky ever will. For CS, at 1680x1050, you need a HD 5870 to run it smoothly, with pretty much max-settings, no AA (some of the sliders aren't maxed). At 1920x1200 the HD 5870 will allready start to struggle.

I will soon benchmark CoP, so right now I can't say what you need, but when playing on just a HD 4890, 1680x1050, maxed settings, no AA, it allready ran decently. I'm quite confident that a HD 5870 will it run at 1920x1200 just fine, PERHAPS even with 2xAA.

Why does CoP run better on high settings than CS?

Clear Sky runs fine (30-60FPS) on a 5870 at 2560x1600. The only setting I don't have maxed is Sun Rays, which I turn to low because it looks identical to high, but has much less of a performance hit.

My 2 GTX285 in SLI pretty much allowed me to do anything in Clear Sky in 1080p, with everything pretty much maxed out. 4xAA, if I remember correctly. Hell, even Crysis didn't give me a hard time.

Your best bet would be two of these:

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2054007

Combine that with a water cooled 4.2 or so ghz i7 and SSDs and I'd be willing to bet a beer S:CS will run great at 1920x1200 or lower. Unless by maxxed out you mean max FSAA trifire, in which case, yeah, not going to happen for the next few years.

Well that's surprising. In retrospect though, I can kind of see it. I tried running Stalker: Shadows of Chernobyl on my old 7600gt at 'High' and remember the lighting being slightly nicer. Screenshots from reviews also seemed nicer. Oh well, if it means I didn't have to tweak, I'm happy.

Speaking of, I should fire up either Shadows or Clear Sky for another go.
