I want to get a DVD player. I got a reasonably high res Panasonic TV with S video. I notice that DVD players come in a wide variety of price ranges and with all kinds of features which I don't understand and can't even list. I don't have home theater. What should I make sure to get and what don't I need. I know I don't need more than a single disk capacity at one time. I can still get up and change disks ever couple of hours or so. :D Would a cheepie be good enough. Thanks

Panasonic DVD-RV80 is the best interlaced DVD player out on the market currently. You can most likely get it for ~$250 right now. It'll probably serve you well for a while, until you get a progressive scan TV.

Yes a basic entry level DVD Player should suit your needs just fine. I would recommend searching the Hot Deals forum for the word DVD and you'll probably find several DVD Player deals. Brands I would recommend are: Toshiba, Panasonic, JVC, Sony and Pioneer.

Here are two deals worth checking out:
Panasonic DVD-RV30 DVD-Video Player (reg. $299.95) for $169 Shipped!!

Philips DVD Player $119 Free S/H

Progressive Scan DVD player $180 [pioneer 434

After you buy a DVD Player, you should check out the forums at DVDTalk.com it's everything you will ever want to know, including DVD Bargains (the best being $10 per DVD including shipping from Columbia House).

Welcome to the world of DVD!

I got a Panasonic DVDRV31K for $194 which also plays VCDs and MP3s and seemed to have enough bells and whistles to suit me.

RossMAN, will check out that site.

If your TV has component inputs make sure to get a player that has outputs. And if your reciever doesn't do DD5.1/DTS decoding you can get players that have onboard decoders. But since you've already bought, don't worry about it. ;)

Moonbeam - Good choice I hope you'll enjoy your DVD player. If you or your family has enough time to watch a few DVDs a week then you can register for a free month of DVD rentals from NetFlix.com, if you would like the URL and more info then please e-mail me at rossman@europa.com with NetFlix in the subject line.

I would also suggest checking out DVDPriceSearch.com a few times a week they list DVD Deals, Specials, Sales and Coupons.

Koni, thanks man. I don't have component. That was the one thing I did know. I also don't have a receiver of any kind and didn't I think, get built in decoding. I'll get one, I guess, if I get surround sound.

RossMAN, thanks for the additional info. Right now I'm just gonna rent DVD instead of VCR for a bit better picture and no rewinding etc.

I got to wait a week cause they were sold out.
