What do you need if you get in a car accident?

What's good to have in the event of a car accident? I'm cleaning out my car and I want to be prepared, just in case...

-disposable camera
-pen & paper
-insurance phone #
-your cell phone to call parents/spouse and 911
-first aid kit

I've been in a couple accidents, but I wasn't driving the car at the time so I didn't have to do anything, but I want to be prepared for the future. Share your thoughts...

I never thought of the camera thing, but it sounds like a good idea to me. Anyone else do this? Would a camera even hold up to the temperature extremes?

I'm wondering that too. Maybe one of those underwater cameras would hold up, or one of the disposable digitals. I got hit while I was driving last December, but it wasn't serious because he only took off a little paint from the bumper. I didn't bother even calling the cops because the car wasn't in that great of shape to begin with, but it would have been nice to have had a camera just in case.

I wonder about that as well...especially in the summer here, temps can easily be 110-120 or even more inside a car if it's parked in the sun...

Will, the first thing that comes to mind is a car. Yup, pretty hard to get in a car accident without a car

No, some of us work in places where cell phone cameras are banned. Pisses me off too because all the cool phones now have cameras on them, so I have a piece of crap phone.

That's actually the reason I got a cell phone with a camera on it, just in case an emergency were to happen (like a car accident) which required pictures for evidence. It was very useful when my car got stolen too.

Last year my company handed out emergency car kits in place of the usual $50 AmEx gift cert (we were thrilled). For the 30 seconds the kit was in my position, I think I noticed that it had a flashlight, flares, jumper cables, and an orange little triangle to put on the ground.

Digital cameras won't hold up as well in court as a regular one-time use 35mm camera.

Too much picture editing nowadays. You might be able to get away with a real digital camera (non phone) and print it out on photo paper and submit that as evidence because people will think that its a regular photo, but once they find out that it was digital, expect a big brew-haha over whether or not it was doctored.

There was even a big case about this when a guy sued his insurance company saying they doctored photos so they could say his car wasn't in such great shape and not have to pay him as much.

EDIT:

In an accident, you'll need your insurance papers and you're lawyer on speed dial.

Its a good idea for the other stuff like a flashlight and first aid kit, but basically take the ambulance to the hospital no matter what, even if you feel fine, and say nothing (especially if its a bad accident).

Must have:

- camera (maybe your camera phone will suffice)
- pen & paper
- insurance papers

So I think your list is pretty complete

I'm not really clear on who has to give insurance info, it's my understanding you're supposed to file a claim with your own insurance company and just give the other driver's info (name, address, etc) to your insurance co.
