What do you make of this news about GM.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Obama administration is preparing to steer General Motors Corp (GM.N) into bankruptcy next week, The Washington Post reported on Thursday, citing sources familiar with the discussions.

Under the GM draft bankruptcy plan, the company would receive just short of $30 billion in additional federal loans, the newspaper quoted a source as saying.

The figure is a starting point in negotiations between the government and GM and could change as could the timing of a bankruptcy filing, the newspaper reported.

A cash injection that large would boost the U.S. government's investment in GM to nearly $45 billion, the article said.

The government previously indicated it planned to take at least 50 percent of the restructured company and would likely assume the right to name GM directors, the Post said.

The paper said the administration was also preparing to lift another troubled U.S. automaker, Chrysler, from bankruptcy as soon as next week, citing industry sources.

If General Motors files for bankruptcy, as widely expected, its healthy assets will be quickly sold to a new company owned by the U.S. government, a source familiar with the situation told Reuters on Tuesday.

The source, who was not cleared to speak with the media and would not be identified, said the U.S. government would pay for the assets by assuming the automaker's $6 billion of secured debt and forgiving the bulk of the $15.4 billion of emergency loans that the U.S. Treasury has provided to GM.

The government task force overseeing GM and Chrysler restructuring has given GM until June 1 to restructure its operations and prove it can be viable without government aid or face probable bankruptcy.

The company on Thursday reached a sweeping deal on concessions with the United Auto Workers and has given its bondholders until next Tuesday to agree to a plan that would reduce the company's debt.

This came AFTER hours, it was on the front page and pulled pretty quick. I figure I should put it somewhere safe, like here.

OCguy already has a thread on the subject in P&N.

People need to see this, people that will NEVER venture into P&N. This affects a lot of lives.

What's sad is that the stock was driven to $2.14 after hours today, from an open of $1.45

This just keeps getting worse. By the way, am I allowed to laugh when all of these government controlled corporations fail.

Who gives a shit, jpeyton is just trying to piss you off for brazenly stating in a higher traffic area that his messiah condoned the failed Bush-Keynsian policy and helped blow billions of dollars of tax payer money only to come to the conclusion that guess what?

Free marketeers were right, GM's best and only real course of action was to declare bankruptcy.

Oh great, the Obama Car Company. Just what we need...a car company with no experience that overpromises and under delivers.

Well at least the business model won't change ;^)

For some reason that's scary. If they're going to fall then let them, but the government should not be involved to this degree. Suddenly the country seems to have an entirely different character...

The government wants more power, more control. I can't, for the fucking life of me, figure out why anyone in this country is supporting MORE GOVERNMENT in our lives. MORE MORE MORE, thats all it fucking is. There are some positives that government can bring, but those are few and far between. More government, as a rule, is always fucking bad. Look at history. Let the people run their own damn lives, they do it better than you, even if they suck at it at times. As a general rule, when in doubt, say no to government intervention.

*edit*

The only thing I want my government doing is protecting me from foreign threats, upholding the law and just keeping a general watchful eye on the country. I don't need them running my companies, or any other BS they are getting their hands in.

Don't you wish Obama would just start a useless war like a good little President, instead of this nonsense with GM and Chrysler?

Absolutely not. I'd just as soon be rid the republicans as well.

"My puppet is better because he's right and cares about what's important for us..."

"No it's my puppet who is better because he's the moral, god-fearing one..."

This bullshit needs to stop. Both parties just fucking love this "I need to vote for a democrat or a republican or my vote is going to be wasted" attitude everyone seems to have. It's NOT a choice between the better of two evils. There are lots of choices. All these fucking pansies are just too scared to choose them. Nothing will EVER change, no matter what the party line of the moment is, unless people show that they are willing to do that.

I try not to think of this as a political move but a business move. The bondholders probably wont budge, then you have the dealerships that are being closed. They will probably sue for equity if there is no Chap11.

I wouldnt say put your life savings in Oct/Nov GM $2.00 puts, but the stock is going to near zero when they emerge from bankruptcy, not when they file. The existing equity is supposed to be worth 1% in the new GM.

Its just business.

There's gonna be massive sell off tomorrow, I bet a lot of the price pump today is from shorters. GM execs dumped their shares already, just a matter of time.

Like I said, nothing is set in stone. You cant trust anything as a sure thing in the market.

I don't know who you are....but I think I love you.

I'm amazed at the number of people in this thread for whom this is OMG news. Do you not pay any attention to the world around you?

Hey, here's an idea government. Stop. Seriously, just stop. The more you interfere the more problems you create. Stop. The more good money you throw after bad the deeper into debt you send this country and the current budget deficits projected out over the next 10 years are simply mind-bogglingly bad. And these projections are probably optimistic. Stop.

Well, if it was my money, I sure won't hold it over the weekend, long weekend. Inexplicably, F is being beaten down...

No, this is NOT news, but there were a lot of people doesn't think it's going to happen next week.

Remember when there was talk of investing "our" Social Security money in stocks? And it got shot down like a nerd hitting on a cheerleader? I like how we're basically doing that now anyway, except only investing in failing companies.

The deadline was June 1st. Which is the Monday of the following week. It's not like it was pulled ahead a week or a month.

Having said that, here's an article that is just about diametrically opposed to what's in your link.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/200..._nm/us_gm_bankruptcy_6

I don't think there exists in America a true journalist anymore. Most articles are fabrications extolled from other articles. It's a swirling mass of FUD. They can't seem to take their bias out of what they write and are evidently too lazy to do any research.

I would love to subscribe to your newsletter. No, really. I would.

I'm OK with this decision. GM was running a non sustainable business, it was only a matter of time before failure. Letting that much company fail would probably be bad, so why not throw a bunch of money at it. The new restructured company can say fuck off to those deadbeat union workers that aren't working but getting paid and benefits. Then maybe GM will be competitive with other car manufacturers and we can see some prices coming down.

I mean c'mon $30k for a car. That is 25% of my house and I guarantee the car won't last as long.
