Okay...now I used to go to BYU so I can clear a bit of this up.

1) Not being a mormon doesn't stop you from going - I knew quite a few non mormons who went there. It's a good place to go to school, and they aren't predjudice against you if you want to go.

2) Curfew on campus or off was not 9. It's 12 on weedays, 1 on Fri. And no, they don't let girls into the guys dorms, or guys into the girls dorms. They have visiting hours 2x a week, though.

3) Caffiene is not the reason to outlaw coffee and tea. The other ingredeants rip you up inside, and are addictive as well. (Anyone look at what happens to coffee pots?) Caffiene is just a common assumption. It's not even illegal for Mormons to drink caffiene. It is, however, discouraged, due also to the addictive nature of it.

4) I never heard of "Honor cops" busting anyone for doing anything. They will get you if you are completely reckless and stupid and do stuff in front of everyone, but I *NEVER* heard of someone getting busted by their licence plate. That's just BS. I knew enough people who broke the honor code and never heard a word about it. I think they watch the Athletes a little more carefully. A few years ago Ronnie Jenkins was the best RB on the BYU football team, and he got the boot - but for multiple breaks of the honor code. You don't get booted for doing anything once.

5) The facial hair thing is true. They make you shave to take tests and stuff, because they want the students to look "clean". Extreme hair styles aren't allowed for men or women. My bro got into trouble for shaving his head (Just a "don't do it again").

6) Short shorts aren't allowed - they aer actually more leanient on skirts in girls being shorter, but not by much. Jeans have been allowed for at least 20 or 30 years. I almost always wore them anyway. And heck, what guy wears short shorts usually? You can wear that stuff for athletic activities, just not around campus.

There! Any more questions?

<-- Born and Raised in Provo, Utah. Dad teaches at BYU. Went to BYU. Any questions?

BTW, most of what has been said is true, except for the Jeans thing. I wore jeans every year I went to BYU.

Do you know where you would want to practice law? If you want to practice in Utah, BYU would be a great choice. Otherwise, I would suggest going to law school in the state you want to practice. The exception to this is if you can get into one of the "national" law schools, which for whatever reason are generally considered the top-14 law schools.

I cringe at the thought of a school governing my life that much.

Not for me. No thanks.

Just because you didn't hear of it didn't mean it occured. I could dig up links substantiating it if I cared but I doubt you would believe the source because those that got busted for what they were doing were often excommunicated. I'm born and raised in SLC (and mormon for that matter) and I have known plenty of people that went to BYU, I've also known quite a few that have been tossed out for honor code violations involving the church moral code. Just because not everyone gets busted doesn't mean that they don't routinely bust people. And you may not get tossed out for cutting your hair "funny" but I guarantee they toss you out immediately for fornication.

Non-LDS students are to be endorsed by (1) the local ecclesiastical leader if the student is an active member of the congregation, (2) the bishop of the LDS ward in which they currently reside, or (3) the non-denominational BYU chaplain.
Better hope that chaplain likes you if you're serious.

EDIT: Also interesting, their Clean Living policy mentions tea and coffee, but not caffiene. Kinda left a loophole there now didn't they?

I'm not sure what type of loophole you are refering to. Caffiene is not banned by the Church's Word of Wisdom, Coffee and Tea are, regardless if they have caffiene or not.

No caffeinated drinks are sold on campus.

I live across the street from the BYU campus. Literally across the street. You don't want to go there if your not a Mormon. You won't fit in at all. I'm not one either. If you go there you will still have to obey their strict student code or you will get kicked out.

You wouldn't like it. In particular you better pay very good attention to the Fobot's post. The moral code at BYU is STRICTLY enforced. I'm not sure about graduates but undergraduates MUST live in BYU approved housing. This means your neighbors watch you and report you for ANY honor code violations including partying or having women in your room (both are violations). Such silly rules as no member of the opposite sex can be in your apartment after 9:00 and you can't go in a room with a bed together unless others are present to verify that nothing goes on and the blinds have to be kept open.

If they find out you have premarital sex you will be expelled. If they find out you had a drink or smoked anything you will be expelled. There are rarely expceptions given to these rules and there is practically a zero tollerance policy (exceptions would be high LDS church connections).

Oh I also forgot to add, any shorts worn on campus must be knee length, you are not allowed facial hair (well trimmed mustaches are allowed but frowned upon) you cannot have long hair (guys) and I believe only recently did they allow Jeans on campus.
BYU was more lax than Ricks (BYU-Idaho) was when I went there. Did that for a year. I'm not a member, was one of 34 out of around 9000 that year. I got along just fine.
