I'm getting my new furnace adjusted today for appropriate gas pressures so after that is done it is likely I'll set the thermostat to adjust throughout the day like I do with the AC in the summer. Up until now I've been running off heat pump only, and it takes a long time (and fair bit of energy) for it to bring the temperature up several degrees. The propane will be a lot faster and more efficient at doing that. Heat pump works well to maintain a temperature, not change it, as long as the temperature outside isn't too cold. It starts to run a lot more in the 20s and struggle in the low 20s, which probably means it is cheaper/more efficient to run propane too much below 30. I'll have to play with it a bit and see.
