What do you have to do to have ALL of your (snail)mail forwarded to a new address? (I'm moving)

So I'm going to be moving at the end of the month, and I've already taken care of important stuff like CCs, bank statements, school, etc. I just want to make sure other stuff that I might have forgotten about gets to me at my new place.

I've heard that you can have the Post Office forward any other mail sent to your former address to your new address. Do I just go into the PO and ask for a form for forwarding mail? Which PO do I go to? The one for my current zip code or the one for my new zip code? Does it matter? Since I'm moving soon, will it be effective as soon as I submit whatever paperwork I need, or will the new tenants of my apartment get my mail for awhile?

Any input and personal experiences are appreciated. 🙂

Go to any post office, there is a little form thing which you fill out and (I think) drop in the mail so the P.O. has your forwarding address on file. It will take a little while to go into effect.

Go to your current P.O. and get the form---it will take effect immediately. But I believe it's only good for a short period of time. But, you said you already changed all your CC's and such so it shouldn't matter about that.

USPS

[edit] they will forward your mail(except periodicals) for up to 1 yr. [/edit]
