autopia or meguiarsonline.com should have detailers in NYC for around $100-200 for typical full details.

Is that a real detail job spending at least two 8 hour days on a weekend under halogens with a rotory, or just a detailed wash and cleaning?

Real detailing costs more than $200. The word "detail" to me implies halogens + rotary buffer and better than factory finish, but I guess to most it just means wiping out the wheel wells and lug nut holes.

I'm exploring the idea of putting a 20' shipping container behind my garage. Right now the garage is so full I can't really do any work in there. The shipping container would be the new home for all the lawn gear and most of the motorcycles.

SSR Comps + tires, new (well used 3K miles) shocks all around, rogue rear shock mounts, sway bar links and front springs.

two 8 hour days with a rotary you are talking about a boat or a car with fire damage?

If you want someone to keep your car for a few days and bill you an insane amount I am sure someone will bite.

However, autopia.com is a forum of both professional and non-professional detailers. Meguiars the same group, but more slanted to their products.

I kind of agree with both of you. The word detail has been coopted. It used to mean alot more. I particularly dislike Meguires forums because they are just shilling. Its like hanging out with Rollo...

I have a real detail guy I use here in town. 300 bucks. Full clay bar, wet sand, interior material refreshing, under body wash with hand applied synth of my choice.

Spraying crap with slick mist does not a detail make.

I may do a heat exchanger and will probably have to look at new rear tires. Otherwise, it will just be keeping the car clean and fueled.

Even back in the late 80's details were usually just a wash, interior clean, 'fast' wax and dressings.

Back then I didn't have machines and at the time 'hand-waxing' was much more popular.

I'd charge $150-200 and be there a whole day. Sometimes $200-300 for two days. I'd take out seats even. I couldn't afford to do that today and would be scared if someone else was charging only that for good work (like not bashing a seat against the door panel when removing it...that happened to one of my cars and the asshats wanted to say it was 'expected'...I ended up getting made right).

What you are talking about esp with wet sanding is a restoration.

IMHO hand application is not worth it anymore and most good products don't work well unless machine applied. A random orbital of a quality design will be much better than most hand appliers.

I have a ton of detailing products. Porter Cable polisher, edge 2000 system, halogens, etc...full arsenal. A few grand of supplies and equipment.

I have been doing it a long time.

Unless you have neglected your car many people are too elitist, and over spending.

If you have neglected your car, hire a rotary polisher guy even if a full wet sand and profit...just make sure he knows what he is doing.

Things I'd love is a hot water extractor and some more machine gadgets.

Going to wash it.

Well, besides that, I'm going to replace one of the caliper piston seals since it looked a little dry last time I had the caliper off.

Yeah, this is what I wanted. When I contacted someone local at detailers domain, I had very little swirls and just wanted everything cleaned up a bit. I thought $700 was reasonable for the 8 hours or so he quoted, I didn't want the interior touched, and he came back and said $1k minimum.

Totally made me discouraged. Today I have a ton of swirls and so on, but still don't think I'd spend $1k to restore it. I'd be happy with a really good wash, wax and sealant put on.

Oil changes, tire rotations, spray down at the local car wash and driving from point A to point B.

I have to get my fenders pulled and rolled on my s2k, but i've been lazy. The 245's on my rears were rubbing at the track because of the offset on the enkeis. i'm going to bring the 245's up front (i only have 215's up front) and get 265's in the rear. i'm not sure if I like the rs3's either. I wasn't used to how quiet they were. On my previous yokohamas, I would get a nice auditory squeal on turns.

Most likely a timing belt/wp job on a 2k accord, 81k miles. The age is what worries me the most, and it is an interference engine as well.

The link I posted to is the real deal. The way they are making money is they have a bunch of guys doing each part. They basically have an assembly line going on. They have a nice building they do the work in. What you guys are talking about is one guy doing the whole thing so that going to take much longer. They get a high volume and do quite well from my observation. Also this is Pittsburgh the cost of living is much cheaper here.

LOL at alky for assuming my car only gets detailed once a year. Ya I take it to those guys once a year but the rest of the time I do it myself. What those guys do is way more then you or I and most people could ever do. 200 is all I ever have to pay so you all can hate on me :awe:

put the summer wheels back on the evo, wash it, and drive it

take the Z out of storage, clean it up, and drive it.

Both cars are already setup ;)

Get the MK1.5 MR2 running, rolling and start tuning. Get the car street legal (been doing some research - might be more difficult that initially thought due to some stupid laws).
Clean my garage and research new projects (powder coating, 3SGTE rebuild and upgrades, eventual 2GR-FE swap??, etc).
