WHat do you guys use to monitor your Wi-Fi connection?

It seems like I'm getting a lot of connection drops. I have a Linksys WAP54G AP and a Dell notebook with a built-in wireless adapter. I have WPA (using TKIP) configured and have a clear line of sight to the AP. I'd like to 1. figure out why I'm losing connectivity and 2. be able to see whether someone can get into my wireless network.
