What do you guys use to ensure your card O\C is stable?

Looking to overclock my 7800GTX, but I don't know of any software which would help me test the stability of it. Playing a game until it crashes is a pretty weird way to test it...I know theres a third party ATI tool that scans for errors as it slowly increases the clock speed of the memory or core...is there anything like that for nVidia cards?

Just play your favorite game.

If it has artifacting or it locks up, then you are going too fast. Not exactly rocket science.. :D

That takes up quite a bit of time. Something I can run overnight would be best :( I don't want it "stable", i want it solid at whatever I clock it to. I can torture my CPU for days, but there isn't a program that will do it to a video card and report if there are any rendering errors? Blah.

Games. Just pick your favourite game. Not only is it a good test, it's also the most relevant to you.

The free version of 3DMark01 allows you to loop the tests indefinitely. While not as taxing as other programs, I still find it useful for stability testing. Usually it will just crash to desktop if my 3d card overclock is unstable.

If using an ATI card - ATI Tool is an *excellent* program that can automatically find the hioghest overclocks for you as it'll detect artifacts for you.

Also, you can set it to automatically load profiles whenever you want eg windows or 3d gaming - that feature is a winner for me as it reduces heat and more importantly the rate of wear and tear on the card.

um, did you read the OP? hes got a 7800gtx.

i test by looping 3dmark05 or 03 overnight. if its not stable, it'll error out.

I'm pretty sure even with an Nvidia card you can use the OC tester. you just can't adjust the clock speed with it.

3dmark03, 3dmark05 etc. are still very usable for testing form artifacts.

Also, titles like HL2, Doom3 and especially FarCry are good for checking for artifacts and stuff.

you can still use the OC tester with an nvidia card :p

3dmark05 and rthdribl are also good.

in terms of pushing the temps to their max the AOEIII demo is excellent, i haven't seen much else that will drive my 6600GT to it's maximum temp in about 5mins tops...even rthdrible doesn't do that...

and unless you have the pro version and can loop tests i can't hit my max temps with 3dmark05...

you can hit max with rthdrible if you maximize the screen

you have to reduce the sampe to 2x tho

pfft! I read the title of that counts and when he said your card I didn't realise that didn't count my 9800 pro what with it being too lowly than the mighty 7800GTX ;p

Although with some seriousness I wonder why noone on the nvidia side of things have come up with a tool as simple and effective as the ATI Tool for ATI because I'm sure many would benefit.

Heck it probably even wouldn't take too much code changing to adapt ATI Tool so it works on Nvidia hardware.

IMO Everquest 2 is the best bet. It's one of the most taxing game son your GPU available and if it shows issues, back it down a little bit then try again.
