What do you guys use for your server naming scheme?

I'm thinking of going with

Seinfeld characters
G.I. Joe characters
Greek gods (probably overdone already)


The Seinfeld ones would be obvious but G.I. Joe you could sort of hide, like 'snakeeyes', "flint", etc.
 
we've used Simpsons characters, South Park characters, Star Wars characters and LOTR characters.

Now we've standardised on company, country, function so XXUKDC01 would be the Domain Controller in the UK - nowhere near as much fun 🙁
 
First we had mythical places: Olympus, Valhalla, Shangri-la
then we moved to functional names: backup server: Rewind, Mail server: Mercury (messenger god) Microsoft Operations Manager: Mother
Now we have 140 Windows servers and just call them something that doesn't trip over the Unix/Linux group naming convention.
 
I don't have any input with server names, but if I did, I'd name them all Top Gun names like Maverick, Goose, Ice, Merlin, etc.
 
3 chars - city
3 digits - building code
2 digits - server/desktop/laptop
3 digits - function code
4 digits - unique ID for that building location
 
I had used char. names from various games, books and movies, but the scheme wasn't very logical to anyone but thoes who set it up.
So I switched to naming the boxes with their primary functions and location. Worked much better.

Etc. When you get a high amount running, names seem to complicate it for me.
 
for all pc's at my parents house when I lived there, I used psychologist names. I had rorschach (still the name of my desktop), maslow(living room computer), jung(my laptop), etc...
Not obvious ones like freud, but still ones who are well-known for some theory or method they developed.
I started that after I took psychology in high school... and of course only I knew what name went to which computer, as there was no method to the madness.
 
At work they use Greek gods...though using names of GI Joe or Transformer characters would be cool. I wish my next server could be named Shadowstorm.
 
Either the names of medieval weaponry (Dagger/Rapier for my laptops, Claymore/Warhammer for desktops, for example), or legendary weapons (Mjolnir, Durandal, Longinus, etc).
 
Since I build my first good machine (P2-233 & 3dfx card in pre-98), I have always went with Chocobos from the Final Fantasy series. Currently I have Fullmetal Chocobo (retired 23-bay dual Xeon rendering machine), Chromatic Chocobo (gaming machine), Mercurial Chocobo (laptop), and uChocobo (PDA). Wireless network is Chocobo Farm. Etc., etc., etc.
 
I had no say at work. They have lame functional names.

I use to have two servers at home and I named them after my kids. We only have one server now - it is still named after my oldest kid.

When we move houses over the summer, the new place will only have a network HD - no server 🙁

It depends.
Something like what tfinch2 suggested is by far the smartest if you have a big medium to large network.

If you are talking like, home network, or some small computer lab or something .... then whatever floats your boat.
At Home I've got "Hoegaarden", "Bernardus", "Westmalle", "Chimay", and "Ommegang" ... I like names of beer the best, but I don't think that would be very practical for a buisness with multiple locations.

Ya, it's a business. We put the country, the the location then up to 12 characters of name.

So

USLOC-xxxxxxxxxxxx - have to keep it simi-clean. so beers and such are probably out.
