Built a new system with win7 x64. In my old system with XP, I used Nero version 6.x. The new version, 2014 is so loaded with bloatware, including installing AVG tool bar, and the Conduit search tool which is a pain to remove. I installed the trail version, but after it finished I uninstalled it.

Any recommendations besides Nero?

I've been using CDBurnerXP since the days of Windows XP and not wanting to mess with Nero nonsense, and CDBurnerXP did everything I used Nero for.

I've also used Alcohol 120% (got it mostly for ripping and drive emulation, being able to burn was just a bonus), but that's not free.

That being said, I haven't really needed anything more so I've only used CDBurnerXP because it was good enough and didn't feel any need to try and find something better (usually only reason for me to switch away from software is if it becomes too bloated and/or a PITA to use), so maybe Imgburn might be worth trying out

Ashampoo Burning Studio. They give it away cheap and even free sometimes. There's also an older version that is always free. 6.1 or something.

Unless ImgBurn has made things easier in the past while, it's annoying to use in comparison. I haven't looked at it lately, but it used to require multiple steps just to copy a CD, etc.

I use ImgBurn for all CD/DVD burning requirements. Have not touched nero in many many years because of the aforementioned bloatware included and this in spite of the program/suite costing a lot of money. Years ago I tried to install a newer version of nero and was told to remove the old version first. OK fair enough. It would not install because it kept detecting the old version even though I had used the nero cleaning tool over and over. That was the end of nero for me.

Another vote for Ashampoo Burning Studio. Extremely easy to use.

I currently have Nero 14 installed. It's not often I burn CDs or DVDs though. I might look into Ashampoo, Nero comes with bundleware which annoys me.

I think I picked up Nero so I could burn a few blu-ray and Nero was the first brand to pop into my head.

I use Roxio EMC 10 on two machines and EMC 9 on another. In any case, it is no longer a common event. :)

For audio CD's, I use EAC. I hadn't thought of using Imgburn, but it should also work nicely for simple copy jobs.

Well I ended up using cdBurnerXP. Very simple to use and to install. Yeah, I think Nero when down the hill after version 6 which is what I have on this old system. The new version of Nero, 14, takes over 15 minutes to install.

An older version of imgburn. The newer ones have ton of adware in the installer. Kinda annoying.

There were complaints about the adware/toolbars still being bundled into the main program even when the boxes to install adware is unchecked just not started up or something like that. But that was sometime back and the situation might be different now. I think its worth a try but you have to be careful and read the fine print before clicking next.

99% of the time my burning needs is done by imgburn. Last version is 2.5.8 updated last year. After installation, you can just copy and use the software by using the exe file itself!

IMGBurn.

I also know about a portable, micro-sized version of Nero 10 (or is it 11?), which works quite well with Win7, and has a very small footprint...

I have also used the Nero 12 micro version. There is also a Nero lite version. Nero Micro will take 160 MB, Nero lite 315 MB, if all applications are installed. You can download them from nsaneforums. You need a valid serial number. I agree, the micro version works well in Win 7, but I prefer Ashampoo's cleaner interface. In comparison Ashampoo 14 takes 321 MB.

who cares about space these days with people having multiple gigs of space? this isn't 2000 anymore.

What I care about is functionality.

Nero 2014 Platinum allows me to bun, recode movies into other formats, burn DVDs easily, take for example:

you have a video file, you want to burn it to a DVD, but in order for it to work on a normal DVD player, it needs to be rencoded, so Nero doesn't require you to fetch other software to do that. It does it on the fly using Nero Video
