What do you guys think?

I was thinking about the next gen systems- the Xbox 3 and the PS4.

Do you think the graphics will be like Crysis on Very High Quality, worse than that, or even better?

I'm assuming that the systems will attempt to render at 1920x1080, with progressive frames, and will shoot for 60fps.

(obviously those are just goals, but they are reasonable).

My personal opinon is that at their best, they MAY be able to get to Very High levels on crysis, but I dont see them getting better, and most likely they wont hit that level at full 1080P60.

Obviously this is just a "for fun" guessing talk, but its interesting none the less.

right now, the best hardware out there can't run crysis at a solid 30fps on very high with everything at a high resolution.

I think I've read estimates that the 360 and PS3 are supposed to last until 2012 or so. By then I'm sure they'll have long surpassed Crysis no matter how pretty it looks. I think it's a bit ridiculous to release a game that won't run well on the majority of computers. Sure it's pretty but I know it'd be almost unplayable on any settings on my PC. That why I got away from PC gaming. I was sick of dealing with trying to make my computer run the games at an acceptable level without spending tons of money. I wish devs would focus on making games that run good on a number of systems. OK I'm done.

In summary, I think they will be better.

Xbox 360 until 2012?

really?

I doubt that very much. Its already been out for two years...I see a new version coming by 2010. I really dont think this gen from MS will be longer than the 5 year cycle. If anything i could see it coming even earlier.

I'd think MS will stretch it out to try to make a profit from this console, unlike the first Xbox.

I say better than we've seen to date. The 2-4 years between now and the next generation consoles is a long time in the world of computer technology. I do hope there's a new XBox (or whatever) before 2012 though. I'm already getting flak from my PC gamer coworkers about Crysis. ;)

I think 2012+ is about right before the next generation of consoles. Because I think all three current consoles are/will be successful - Wii is a huge hit and will be more so once the supply meet up with demand, 360 is successful with its early head start, and PS3 will be successful once the hardware prices drop as manufacturing process mature and AAA titles such as MGS and Final Fantasy are released.

If they're all successful, 7+ years life span is very possible. There's no reason for them to bring out new consoles when they could milk the old ones for profits. This is especially true for 360 and PS3 since both consoles sustained huge losses in hardware cost during their initial startup. It makes sense for them to recoup those losses before moving on to next generation.

Now, when next generations consoles are released, I suspect it will be twice the leap of PS2->PS3 or Xbox->360. At least I hope it would.

I'm far more concerned with how the next gen will control, play and work online than I am with how it looks.

I'm predicting a huge surge in the number of peripherals for all systems next generation. Thanks to Nintendo.

Hopefully we'll get an XBL 3.0, perhaps subscription free?

I think they did the Wii and DS as an industry wide prank, just to make people go WTF?! while they put more time into getting better hardware and 3rd party connections.

If making a disgusting amount of money and selling systems faster than they can make them is an industry wide prank, then its going to be a good time to be a comedian in the industry.

why would the most successful console (so far this gen) be pushed aside in 2 years when the least successfull last more ?

i think the Wii low end gfx will alow it to out last all other systems.
anyone buying the Wii accepts that it has weak graphics. no so with the ps3 or xbx 360.

so when xbox 360 looks far outdated the gamers will cry out and we'll get a new one. that won't happen with the Wii.

Theres absolutely no technical reason why they could not put out a Wii that renders the same Wii games in a higher resolution. Sure, won't look as good as 360 in that case, but it can most certainly be done.

Of course they could but if they're raking in money hand over fist why would they? ;)

Because if they can make a profit on the system, and if they can sell a 2nd, upgraded system to people willing to pay like myself, why wouldnt they? This is assuming that they eventually do reach the point sometime next millenium when they can stock the shelves faster than people are willing to buy them.

If they were to do so, I doubt that they would cease to sell the SD only wii for those who would rather pay less.

I'm not sure. I plan on skipping this generation of consoles. I do not own an HDTV, and when I bought the Xbox, no more than a year later they released the Xbox 360. Boo hiss. I do, however, have a computer that can run CoD4 and games like that on all max settings, so I'm fine with sticking to the compy, espescially when games like Gears of War are coming out for PC.
