you could also do this...and charge him for the amd and tell him you got him a fat discount...
being ... that you believe amd is better than intel...this won't be a bad idea...but if you don't...than i don't think you should do it...
 
umm daica, intel is good, if this guy has the cash, and doesnt mind the cost, and is other wise not too computer literate, go with an intel cause people who are less pc literate might try stupid things, and not know how to fix them. he sounds cool to give you a vid card, if you want to get your choice, just install the worst drivers for the one you want so it locks up, and the one you dont want get the latest (but not beta) drivers, and tweak it up good. and also for maximum success suggest he gets a hollywood dvd decoder card, and wire it up good for him inside so he can pipe stuff to that 64 inch vega wega whatever, sounds good, make sure the mobo aint a rambus board (you probly already knew that)

You just read my mind, im gonna reiterate the point that he DOES NOT know 1 thing about computers again. If i were to tell him not to turn his monitor off and let it standby, trust me he wont touch it. Im just gonna get the Tbird 1.1 with the Abit KT7 Raid and deal with him later. Ok now its final. One more thing, do u guys have any other suggestions on the case. What about the supermicro 760A?
 
Heheh...unless he is running Win2K he will need to reboot with Win98 at least once a week for safe measure. Otherwise he will complain to you that his system is running slowly when the memory leaks in Win98 eat up the free RAM. I bet if you just left the AMD BIOS banner and just put an Intel sticker on the outside then he would never pick up on the difference. I mean, how many non-techie computer users actually pay attention to the POST screen?

Why not AMD, you think that if you mess your system up the Intel CPU is going to fix it? The AMD CPU is not only as compatiable, it is also faster, so going with Intel when you want more stability and performance, well, that is just plain stupid.

And i ask again, why not SCSI, if he wants speed, and money is no object, then get him 10 Seagate cheetah X15 drives, RAID5 setup with a dual channel RAID adapter, 5 on each channel. If you want the best perfomance you can get and got the money to spend such a setup would be the most reliable and definently better than some lousy old IDE disks (lousy compared to the SCSI disks i mentioned).

Pcresources I could be wrong with this, but your right, why not go with the AMD, if Daica's good and worth his salt, and sets it up right the guy will have no problems. I'm gonna hafta say,look at the first posting, about NO scsi. I like scsi, never tried it, but it looks good, I've only had expierince with scsi equipment not working, a scsi raid 0 mirror that got fried and win nt couldn't boot off it any more for some reason. if DAICA thinks he's good enought to handle the amd, but not the scsi let him do it. scsi is just too tricky to play with on a brand new sys built from scratch for people who have been doing scsi before, forget people who have never dealt with scsi before

If everyone were to follow your advice it would mean that there would be no SCSI setups, everyone has a first time. I don't know how many SCSI setups you have configured but i would like to ask you why you think it is any harder than configuring an IDE setup? With the controllers used today and the drives everything is pretty much PnP just like IDE, so it really isn't any harder setting up a SCSI setup than an IDE setup.

If he wouldn't set it up right it wouldn't matter what CPU he would use, it is just as hard or as easy installing an AMD as it is installing an INTEL CPU.

hey guys,

I have a scsi setup at work that i built myself and love every minute i spend on it, BUT for an inexperienced user that will spend most of his time surfing the web and playing such games as solitaire and The Sims (no fps games here) would be such a waste of time. So i can not comprehend myself to even bother looking into scsi.

I just placed the order this morning and of course he wanted it overnite, so i should be receiving it tomorrow morning. MY GOD, do u guys know how much they charge to have a heavy ass monitor, case and the rest of the equipment shipped overnite? Lets say its almost half of some peoples computers. Im gona enjoy playing with this computer awhile to test it out (quake benchmarks baby).

Well, 512MB of memory would do less than a SCSI setup, at least with the SCSI setup solitaire would load faster. And if you were using a RAID 5 SCSI setup, you would have a more reliable system.

It think BOTH the 512MB AND the full SCSI option is an overkill! I agree with PC Resources when he says that SCSI is not that hard to setup. I've converted my system to full SCSI storage and scanner except for the HD. It wasn't too bad but there were some tricks to it. SCSI is overkill for this guys system. He can live with the faults of IDE.
