What do you guys think of this HS? (SVC GC68)

HERE. I'm thinking for $5, how good could it be? But, they say it's rated up "approximately XP1800" which would be a 1530MHz processor.

Looking for CHEAP HS' that take an 80mm fan. I.E. quiet.

I'm thinking of buying two to replace the standard 60mm HSFs I have on my server(1GHz TBird) and secondary(XP1800) rigs. Those little 60mm fans are too loud...especially the OEM one that came on my 1GHz B Thunderbird (remember those? )

Thoughts? I don't want to spend a lot of money...obviously.

I've got that cooler on my 1600+ overclocked to 1800+. It's a good cooler, but the price makes it a GREAT cooler.

From what I recall, it was a decent performing unit, but here is a review.. Can't beat the $5 price.

I bought two, one for a Tbird XP1800+ and one for a Tbred XP1700+ (haven't installed it on the latter yet). It works well, temps are around or slightly lower than the retail HSF and quieter too. I also recommend their cheap case fans too (5/$11). I replaced my PS and outtake fans with those and now the HD is the loudest thing in the computer.

Thanks a lot guys. Thanks for the linkage too, ericboo. I have a bigazz AX-7 w/an 80mm fan on my main rig...I like these big HS that use 80mm fans...SO MUCH quieter than the 60mm hairdryers. Thanks again.

Yep, definititely great for the price. Rec'd it to my bro-in-law for a T-bird 1.4 I gave to him. He probably won't OC, maybe modestly, and is definitely the better than the Volcano6 and Delta screamer I generously donated to him

Hehehe, lately a lot of people are freely giving away their Delta screamers and 50db case fans. Quiet is the way to go.

Sounds like a good deal for the heatsink. I wouldn't change the fan for a slower one as they suggest for your xp1800 box, but you could probably get by with a quieter fan on the 1ghz box if noise is a major concern.

I have this on my 1700+. It workes great. Temps stay in the low 40's. Really quite CPU fan. Much quieter than my retail fan.

OTOH were'nt you touting copper based HSFs the other day?
How about a Volcano 6cu for a few bucks more?

For the boxes that these are going in (no overclocking at all) I don't want to spend a few dollars more. Copper is better. It's also more expensive.

I have been using the GC-68 for awhile now. 1 on an 1800XP, 2 on a 1.2G Athlon MP, and 1 other on a 2000XP. All temps are good and I haven't had a problem with any of them. The A7M266-D didn't like 1 of the GC-68 and I trimmed it down a bit to clear a capacitor(sp).

Volcano 6 is still 60mm isn't it? Unless they revised its specs similar to the SK-6 to SK-7 mods. I ran that thing with a Delta screamer for all of 5 minutes before placing an order for a different sink.....ugh. 80mm is the only choice for air cooling IMO; lower rpm fans that push the same air equates to a hum rather than a high pitched whine. Also, the larger base allows for more fins/cooling area, which is also a bonus.
