heres what i got so far:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz -- $183.00 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005
Intel BOXDG965RYCK Socket T (LGA 775) Intel G965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard -- $109.99 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813121048
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB -- $94.99 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148140
Sonata II -- $99.00 = http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16811129155

I need advice on both 1gb and 2gb memory configurations (still undecided). links to product would be appreciated.

i'm particularly curious on the motherboard. i have yet to find any reviews on it, and 109.99 is kind of cheap for a mobo. the computer is for someone else (non geek) so it doesn't need advanced bios features, but i would like to overclock it a bit (perhaps to 2.2ghz?). i hope i won't have any problems :??

how far are people getting on the stock voltage with the e6300

Most people don't get anywhere with the cheap intel boards, not overclocking at least. If it's not for a geek then save some time, effort and money by going with an AM2 single core chip. The motherboard should be compatible for a good few years so upgrades will be possible, in the mean time you'd be getting him a faster chip for most roles.

Agreed but i would suggest a dual core.. its not that expensive but alot faster. For sure if hes not a retarded overclocker then AM2 is the place to be just because of the compatibility and socket life of AMD systems vs the what 2 day chipset life of an intel? lol

Point being, If hes not going to do anything more then 100mhz overclock go with AM2

Dual core isn't nessisarily faster for most applications. Gaming = nope (definitly not at the cheap end, which this most certainly is), random office apps = Nope (no need), the only thing that really takes advantage of it is rendering/transcoding. If the user is thinking about doing the latter then yeah, dual core would be good. If it's just for internet, music and movies then dual core is a waste of money.

++ it is about the closest i will probably come to a core 2 system for a good while. i'm tired of building amd systems.

hmm what about this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131043

No it doesn't. (Does it?)

There are two potential concerns with building a budget Core 2 Duo system. The first is availability, and hopefully we will have a clear answer on that subject in the near future. The other is motherboard cost. The ASUS P5W-DH we used in this article is currently the best overclocking motherboard we've seen for the socket 775 platform, but at $250 it is anything but cheap. We have seen quite a few of the P965 motherboards that can also overclock the budget Core 2 chips to reasonable levels, with prices hovering much closer to $140.

Now with that board you're talking. A mild OC should be simple enough with that. Still recon that a single core is better value for money though.

You said your tired of AMD systems? So you mean your tired of paying half the price for double the performance(prior to C2D) And your tired of being able to keep the same chipset every time you upgrade your CPU? Ya i know what you mean. I wish i hadnt built my 939 system. I dunno but in the 3 CPU upgrades i have had it always felt empty without dishing out another 150$ for a motherboard as well...

hmm
what about this am2 system instead then:
