So, my girlfriend and I are just sitting in bed, laptops in our lap, browsing the web, etc, etc. She shows me this article that a friend of mine linked to on Facebook.

http://www.mainecampus.com/hom...4a96-90a1-e98fef831f1c

Some kid drank too much, fell down the stairs, and his buddies decide to let him sleep it off on the couch. Kid dies. Dumb bitch writes this article in the OP-ED section of the school news paper.

The first time I was drunk, I was 13. I came home and climbed up the 15 stairs to my bedroom but kept bumping into the other door. My mother opened it, and I remember seeing her face and then tumbling backward down the stairs until I landed in a heap at the bottom. I swore that next morning I would never drink again, not realizing how close I came to dying.

Fast-forward to a few years later. I had my two best girlfriends in the car with me, and all I can remember is one of my friends screaming, "White line, Jaime! White line!" Turns out I had gone over the white line and into a ditch, made a full 360-degree turn and kept driving erratically until we got home. I could hardly look my friends in the face, because I knew how close we had come to dying.

Fast-forward again to my 19th birthday party where I woke up naked in my bed and could only remember a glimpse of someone leaving my bedroom. Turns out my friends had put me to bed fully clothed, and while everyone was asleep, I was raped while unconscious. There are many more stories just like this, shared by thousands, and I write this piece in homage to the sad stories related to drinking. In particular, I write this in response to the tragic passing of Dylan Lyford.

I am not here to lament what drinking does or to tell anyone how to make decisions, because I would be telling you to do what I say and not as I did. All I hope is that all the sad stories related to alcohol resonate with readers so they can start to tell their own. I just went first. Whether you knew Dylan or not, I beg you to take a mature moment and share your stories. Not for laughs. Not to be the cool guy. Simply to admit aloud that America's youth has a drinking problem. Add up all your stories, and it becomes ironically sobering.

Bad stuff happens to those who drink too much. And as you can see, you never know what's going to happen until it happens. Alcohol was not forbidden in my house, but my European father detested stupid drunkenness. Alcohol, he said, is there to open our minds and let loose our tongues for philosophy. Alcohol is not meant to be chugged, bonged and drunk until we puke and pass out.

Why do we do it, then? My answer was probably the same as yours: Drinking is fun. I am now in my 30s, and I think my father wise. The fun I have is limited to the perfect buzz I get after a few that gets me philosophizing, telling jokes or laughing until I pee my pants. But, it's fun. That is the extent, though, because I know what too much drinking does. Take a moment, talk with your friends and admit that drinking is OK. But the way in which many drink is not OK. It's serious, and it needs to be talked about. Not by your elders, not by your teachers, but by you and your drinking buddies.

Now, is it just me, or does this article seem flat out stupid and pointless? Uses the poor judgment, neglect, stupidity, and subsequent death of a student as an opportunity to craft some shitty pseudo intellectual article about her many heartbreaking tales about drinking.

"When I was 13. I swore to never drink again, after falling down the stairs and realizing how close I came to dying. But oh wait, lol, a few years later I almost killed my friends and I by driving drunk and going off the road! Then I woke up naked when I was 19 and found out I got raped!"

That's why the drinking age is 21. Not 13, or 15, or 19, but 21. Even still, countless legal drinkers are hospitalized or even worse dead because of alcohol abuse. Not yielding to the inescapable effects of alcohol, and making extremely poor decisions. There's no problem with alcohol abuse, you can't blame alcohol for its abuse. You have to blame the kids abusing it.

If somebody's going to drink to the point where they're going to compromise their life, and the lives of others, they deserve exactly what they get.

America's youth doesn't have a drinking problem. America's youth just doesn't think about their actions and the consequences (Read: Stupid).

There's a difference between drinking too much, and just being stupid. I know when I've had enough and need to call it a night and start drinking some water. And I definitely know when I'm not good to drive. Even times when I know I can drive just fine, I stop and think of the consequences of an OUI. Loss of license, fines, insurance rates, permanent record, a night or two in jail, etc, etc.

I guarantee this article won't have a lasting effect on anybody. Perhaps there will be a brief "You know, she's right." period. But not long after, the effect will have worn off, and it's back to black out/puking drunk.

yup.

She has personal issues that she's not willing to admit. Would rather blame it on her "problem."

america's youth has a drinking problem? no, more like "america has a problem with personal responsibility."

(the following is direct at the writer of the article)

YOU chose to drink so much that your body could not handle it. YOU kept those drinks coming when you probably had a good buzz going. YOU have a lack of responsibility. don't try and blame the alcohol for your failures that ultimately led to some really bad shit.

and this is why i will never drink and drive or drink so much that i black out.

I think those stories weren't really about her, they were stock "alcohol is bad" stories. This article could have been a school assembly or an after school special.

It kinda makes me think about all those women that were almost raped.

Or she willingly had sex with the person and doesn't want to admit it to herself and after lying to herself for so many years she believes it.

I don't drink, and I don't agree with drinking, but she's going about it wrong. I think she's right that America's youth does have a drinking problem, but like she said herself, she's told herself 3 times now that she'd stop and yet she hasn't.

I've heard that so many times from friends/family ("I'm never drinking again.") Sometimes they actually mean it, sometimes they don't, but they sure as hell never keep to their word. That's the real problem - if everyone would keep their drinking under control after they say that, they'd be fine, but instead they think that bad crap won't happen again and yet they do it.

In short, Americans..nay, all people (me included), are stupid as hell and can't learn from the past. And that's something we can all agree on.

If only there were another substance that could provide a similar experience without carrying many of the dangers of alcohol...

I don't really see anything wrong with the article. Sure it's nothing really all that special - just a wordy way to say "Drink Responsibly", but nothing terribly bad about it.

Cliffs:

1. Kid drinks too much and dies
2. Woman writes long diatribe about her growing up a drunk and how she really should be dead
3. OP writes weak-assed rant about woman's story and how he wishes she was dead
4. I wasted 5 minutes reading this thread and wish I was drunk
5. Zero profit
