i have some and used some but they don't seem very responsive and at times jerky when moving like infrared mice

the only pro about the optic mice is no pad

i love mine, logitech mouseman wheel optical. I don't have those problems ppl say, ie loss of control in games and such.... its a thing you gotta try for yourself for a while.. if it don't work for ya, go back to dem balls.

I've used a trackball for years now and just switched to the MS intellimouse explorer because it is MORE responsive in games. Optical mice are better for games than wheel mice. If you have problem with the cursor being non-responseive or jumping, try upping the scan rate of the optical mouse (assuming it's ps2).

I love my Mouseman Wheel optical. Had some driver and recogniion difficulties, but it works like a charm, and I like thinking that I'll never hace to clean a mouse again.

I love mine, never had problems with it going spaz if you whip it around too quickly. My friends have. One of them has the older explorer and one has the newer...I have a newer one as well. I hate using a regular mouse!! Make sure you spend the money for a good Logitech or MS..I'd say go top of the line, it's something you use all the time and they are more comfortable then the lower priced ones!

the one that's giving me problems is a logitech wheel optical usb/ps2
it was on sale cheaper then other logitech's optical mice so i guess i should have known better but i thought that name brand alone would be ok

I have both the intelemouse explorer and the Logitech optical and I have not had problems with either. I find that they work much better then a standard ball mouse, and certainly require less cleaning.

I've been using the MS Intellimouse Optical for a while now and I can't stand using a ball mouse anymore because it just seems so unresponsive.

well the thing is that the mouse is very responsive but every few minutes the arrow just takes off [ really fast ] by itself to the other side of the desktop, without me moving the mouse
i set the arrow speed low with zero acceleration but that didn't help and it's not a slow mouse problem that could be fixed with a refresh rate increase

what should i try next?

i didn't load the logitech driver that came with it since win2k seems to load it's own drivers fine

boy o boy do i beg to differ with you on that one!

Ive used only trackballs for the last 3-4 years and I love them compared to mice for gaming.
Its great only having to move your thumb instead of the whole mouse.

Currently using a MS Trackball Optical (black one) and it rocks in HL dm. =)

They do take some getting used to, but i could never go back.

lol...that has to be the funniest thing i've EVER heard...there is not a single person that i have to talked that uses a trackball for games that hasn't loved it 10x better than any other mouse...if you can't use fine..but don't say you can't game w/ them because i can and do...quite well as a matter of fact

Do track balls work for point and click games to?

I think that the roller would probably work quite well for aiming in FPS games, but how quickly can you move from one side of the screen to the other for SC or D2..

BTW I've been using an optical logitech for months, there is no way I'd go back to a balled mouse. Not having to clean the optical's ball is enough reason to use it, nevermind accuracy improvements ;)

i didn't think such a topic would result in heated debate

also i've never had to clean the ball, i've always kept the pad clean so the ball stays clean

Optical mice my favourite subject almost ;) anyway my Logitech Optical Mouseman Wheel is great in games & have not had any problems,I will say the surface matters since the optical sensor is more responsive on certain types of surface,I`ve tried lots of different surfaces & once you get the right one you are laughing,I know some people don`t use mouse mats with Optical mice, but a good mouse mat with the right type of surface works wonders.

:)
