Ok while I was asleep, my g/f used my computer and she claims that suddenly, the screen turned black and few seconds later it went to the "motherboard screen", so not the BIOS, but like the motherboard logo and it kept going back and forth between the motherboard logo screen and black.

She shut the computer off and reboot it 30 seconds later and it started up fine. But now there's are a ton of problem. Basically, nothing works. Internet doesn't work, sound drivers don't work. When you click on My Network places, nothing shows up and the computer beeps.

Althouh system resotre is set on "Max", it doesn't have any dates bolded I can restore it to.

Everything else seems to work OK.

I spent a load of time trying to figure this problem out on google, but I have no idea what I could even look for. Could this be a virus?

Hope you guys can help, because I'm in a pickle :)

It's a long shot, but I found a problem on my computer that could be related. If I brush the PS2 slot for the keyboard, the computer reboots, sometimes just once, sometimes multiple times. So I'm wondering if you might have a connection somewhere that is cutting in and out?

The only thing I've done (Hardware wise) is exchange the 256RAM that used to be in there for a 512MB stick. I did that the other day and it worked perfectly.

BTW- I'm refreshing this thread every 5 minutes, so feel free to ask a question or post a suggestion and get a reply in matter of seconds or minutes

Try to remove Java if you have it installed. The new version ****** up my system, perhaps others will have problems as well?

I'll try removing it.

Could my computer be running in safe mode without me knowning? Wouldn't it have "Safe Mode" written on all four corners if it were?

When I try to remove Java, it says:

"The Windows Installer Service could ot be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personenel for assistance."

I got something to work with now :) Thanks for the suggest

EDIT: I fixed that error by doing this:
1. Open a CMD.EXE prompt.

2. Type msiexec /unregister and press Enter.

3. Type msiexec /regserver and press Enter.

Now I can remove Java, let's see where this goes..

edit2: removing java did nothing :(

based on experience, your gf did something goofy, possibly not knowing, or reluctant to tell
if you were running in safe mode, you would have no video drivers, and screen would be basic
safe in four corners is Win 98

well, four levels of action-

reset cmos, set failsafe options in bios

boot to safe mode dos screen (F8), pick last known good config option

do a restore to previous time
To bring up System Restore, go to Start/Programs/Accesories/System Tools then click "System Restore". You must be logged in as Administrator and make sure that you close all programs and save all files. Select the radio button that says "Restore my computer to an earlier time" then click "Next". The days in bold type are days that have restore points.
Another way is hit F8 to get into safe options and pick safe mode command prompt
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449
safe mode with command prompt, >not< safe
then just type in.........
%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Repair install with booted to XPCD (you lose no data or programs, only settings)
