Thoughts?

Might be a good way of seeing the real-world performance of all the different makes of hard disks in one place, and a way of directing people to the right hard disk for their needs.

Here's the drives in my main machine:

Fujitsu 36GB SCSI 10,000rpm 8MB cache U160* SCA drive.
MAP3367NC.

*U320 drive running on a U160 controller.

Maxtor 120GB PATA 7,200rpm 2MB cache DM+9 DMA133.
6Y120L0

Seagate 200GB PATA 7,200rpm 8MB cache 7200.7 DMA100.
ST3200822A.

Any more?

[Edit] SynthDude2001:

Seagate 250GB SATA 7,200rpm 8MB cache 7200.7 S150.
ST3250823AS.

dowxp:

Fujitsu 36GB SCSI 15,000rpm 8MB cache U160,
MAS3367NC.

Harriet T*bgirl:

Maxtor 300GB PATA 7,200rpm 8MB cache 7200.8 DMA100.
ST3300831A.

Seagate 160GB PATA 7,200rpm 2MB cache 7200.7 DMA100.
ST3160021A.

Western Digital 120GB PATA 7,200rpm 2MB cache BB DMA100.
WD1200BB-53CAA0.

EyeMWing:

Toshiba 60GB PATA 4,200rpm 8MB cache MK60 DMA100.

I'll see if I can remember to run it on my main hard drive one of these days (Seagate 250GB 7200.8 SATA). But it's almost 6am right now. :p

I'd be interested to see how that stacks up against my 200Gb 7200.7 PATA :)

(Oh, and my SCSI drive, but I've just got that and am extremely impressed ;) )

Fine, I'll run it just for you ;)

(I actually did just run it once and thought something was horribly wrong since the results were between 2 and 5MB/sec....turns out my nightly virus scan was running in the background )

I just had an idea- if the results were saved, sent to me, zipped up and hosted somewhere, then anyone wanting to know the results for a particular drive could download the file, import them into HDTach and then compare the drive to their current drive(s). :D

Sounds like a good idea. :)

I'm not gonna run the test again right now since I've resumed my virus scan, maybe later :p

No worries. I'll bump this every now and then, maybe move it to GH :)

I have a small armada of drives here I could test. But IIRC, HDTach performs poorly on full drives. And they're all full.

There doesn't seem to be any performance difference here; the Seagate was tested when it was barely 10% full, and this morning it had 15Gb free and tested about the same.

This test sucks. I can get 200k read/write out of ATTO, but I get 54k here ? At least the CPU util was 2% and the average seek was 0.9 and the read line was totally flat.

I'm sure you can delete some of the donkey porn to make room for a quick bench or two ;)
