well im stoked for getting my treo 700p, but what should i do about charging the battery? should i just immediately charge it with the ac adapter and not even turn it on or use it as soon as i take it out of the box and charge it when the battery dies?

btw, if i can charge it immediately with the ac adapter, can i still use the treo while charging, or will that screw up the battery?

thanks guys! :)

"battery conditioning" is a process that has pretty much outlived its usefullness. NiCad batteries it works like a charm, NiMH or LiIon not so much. In fact it's rather bad for the battery.

Don't worry about it. Modern batteries don't need conditioning.

it doesnt matter for "modern" batteries? oooh i didnt know that. so that means i can just charge/use it whenever i want?

Do whatever the manual tells you to do.

If there's anything specific you should do with regard to battery charging, it's always in the manual.

Yes. NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydroxide) and LiION (Lithium Ion) batteries are memory-free and require no conditioning of any kind. NiCad (nickel cadmium, i.e. old school rechargeables) would develop memory unless they were charged and completely discharged regularly, causing them to not last as long. If you are not going to use it for a long time make sure the battery isn't all the way full, however, as that can cause lost capacity.

Modern batteries do best when they're "topped off" every night and just used regularly. Seriously, don't worry about it. Just use it and recharge it whenever you want.

Using it with the AC cord attached won't hurt anything, so long as it is taken off occasionally to allow the battery to discharge a bit.

What's the cause of modern batteries losing their charge over time, then? I still submit that even modern batteries don't hold their charge as long as compared to new ones.

Well....yeah. I never said they didn't. All batteries lose the ability to hold a charge over time. The metal plates inside of it react less strongly with the acid. That's a wholly seperate phenomenom from memory, though.

The gradual decrease in efficiency over time from a battery is unavoidable. Memory, which happens a lot faster and kills the battery far more effectively, has largely been elimanated.
