One of my coworkers and i are at the bottom of the totem pole in the IT department at my community college. we talked about it today, neither of us have college degrees. everytime we fail to know how to do something, we must suffer the humilation of asking for help. our boss has hinted to us that he might send us to the gulags if we do nott fix the pc work orders he gives us (meaning if our skills are not high enough). both of us are usually early for work and sometimes work an hour extra, all without getting paid for the extra time being put in. but if he follows thru and sentances us to the gulags, we will slave for the rest of the summeir out in the abandoned chapel (new baptist student union was built and the chapel is now used for storage), no airconditioning, 100 degrees outside, taking parts from old printers and merging them to create new ones. i went out there today get get a video card and the stuff is piled to the ceiling and is hotter than the burning fires of hell. I got work my ass off so we can stay out of there.

I don't fear losing my job. That's a horrible, horrible position to be in; it elicits complacence in life and in your work. In the words of Peter Gibbons from Office Space:

When I make a mistake, I have eight different people coming by to tell me about it. That's my only real motivation is not to be hassled, that and the fear of losing my job. But you know, Bob, that will only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired.

[edit]I wanted to add that I'm sorry about your situation. I didn't mean to imply that it's your fault; rather, that feeling afraid of losing your job is a horrible burden to bear. Good luck![/edit]

What do I fear about my job? - I think I fear having to read run on sentences by people.

What do I fear about things outside my job? - Same answer.

Is it considered a state job? Why do you have to ask for help? Aren't there a million discussion boards dedicated to tech support?

You're not kidding. I'm single with no kids, so I can afford a little volatility in my vocational interests. Most everyone I work with has kids, wife, schools, insurance, etc. to support, so their entire motivation in work is to remain under the radar of the pointy-hairs. I can completely appreciate their motives, but I also sympathize when they get laid off as so many have over the past few years; I can't imagine the levels of stress induced by such financial straits.

I don't fear losing my job due to my own incompetence, I fear losing my job because my company ceases to exist.

getting killed by one of the rich suburbanite mothers that spend a lot of time driving around the tiny roads in giant vehicles and talking on their cell phones as i drive between buildings for my job.

just today i was behind a woman stopped at a red light. she was turning left (as was i) and, while the light was red she began to slowly inch forward more and more until she was in the middle of the road and proceded to turn, forcing traffic to stop. she was honked at quite a bit.
it should be noted she took the time to place the cell phone to her chest and scream obscenities and flip off the cars that honked.

hm. I guess the only thing I really fear is having to wake people up at 4 am. I had to wake up the CTO at 3 am a few months ago... that was pretty fear inspiring ;)

Sometimes I fear that all the 16 year old girls will band together, tie me to the chair in the office, and take turns plundering my manhood until it works no longer. Then I will be fired for fraternizing with employees, and the security camera tape will reach the internet, and all of you will be fapping to my internet sex tape.

My biggest fear is getting into an accident while at work, because my insurance doesn't cover me while I'm delivering.

i dont have a job right now, cause im going to school.. but from the past, my biggest fear.. having an idiot as a boss..

the fear comes from ppl i have worked with, bosses who are idiots and have no idea how to do things.. they want something done but they either dont want to spend the money or two go around the wrong way to get it done.. and then i have to fix the problem because they now have screwed up.

i fear equipment breaking since, in addition to drycleaning clothes, removing stains, and working on special care items regularly (rugs, leather goods, shoes, hats, comforters and blankets and more) im often responsible for alot of the maintenance; if something breaks it has to be fixed immediately, and I get behind somewhere else.

Or if something breaks and its really really bad, im there way into the night to try and fix it before the next work day (more than once ive worked til 10 or 12 pm to get equipment running, and had to be at work at 6 the next morning, bah)

I'll second that fear.

I like my job a lot, but I can't see running around a NOC carrying 60 pound servers when I'm in my 50's.

me too ;) seriously... I made a post about the same thing in the gun thread. lol.

one night a few weeks ago, the overhead lights went out in one of the server farms. the only lights we had were the emergency lights and the blinking power/activity lights from the servers themselves. it was the creepiest experience of my life.
