I'm looking to pick one up right around x-mas time for myself. And well i've been a PS all my life. i've owned a modded ps1 and ps2. when the ps2 first came out it was my dvd player more then a console player.

I'm not extremely fimilar with either system from what i hear/read, xbox runs on HD-DVD's and can be used as a player. PS3 runs off blue-ray and can be used as a BLUE-Ray PLayer.

My gf has the wii, i like the fact they they can download games like super mario 3 and teris and play for free. It has a web browser built in as well. So you really dont need a game, the mod chip allows it to play dvd which is pointless.

Now what about the ps3 and 360 what can they do aside from games? Mod-chips aviable yet for the ps3? i saw stuff on 360 but thats as far as i'll go. Both systems are within 100$ of each other. I've heard online play for ps3 was free VS xbox live for $10 a month.

What is the main purpose of the hard-drives since both comes with like a 20-60gb? Graphics better on one Vs the other? AT bestbuy they seems likewise.

XBOX 360 has an optional HD-DVD add-on, it's not built in like the Blu-Ray drive in the PS3. I personally enjoy the fact that the 360 acts as a very nice media center extender for Vista (works in XP MCE as well). Hard drive is nice for save games and demo downloads. 360 has the Live Marketplace where you can purchase TV shows (SD and HD) and rent movies (again, SD and HD).

Other than that, I don't know what to tell you.

I only have the Xbox 360 so that's all I'll get in to here.

The 360 uses dual layer DVDs and has an optional external HD-DVD player for ~$180.

Online play (Xbox Live Gold) can be had for $40 a year if you shop around, I think it's $50 MSRP. The silver membership is free, but you need gold for online multiplayer. You can see the differences here. You can download videos, trailers, game demos, rent movies and buy TV shows. All that gets stored on the HDD (along with your profile and game saves I think).

There are software mods for the 360 but it involves opening the unit which voids the warranty. It's also possible to get your 360 banned from Xbox Live.

On my PS3, I play Blu-Ray movies and DVD's. Upscaling is incredible for DVD's.

I also installed Linux, and so, I just fool around with it. I post on message boards using the built in browesr, I use different programs, etc.

I also keep Folding @ Home running for a bit.

The Hard Drive space is for things like demos and movies. You can switch the PS3 drive with any laptop drive, which is really convenient for the future, Its even cooler than Sony gives this a thumbs up.

Any yes, Playstation Network is free, but you still have to pay for things like Super Stardust HD and other "minigames"

As for games, the 360 has a bigger library. Multi Plats look the same. 360 has games that look better. PS3 has games that look better. Etc.

Anything else?

Ten bucks a month for Xbox Live? Who spewed that b.s.?

Well, it is $8 per month if you decide to subscribe month-to-month. That's kinda close to $10 🙂. But when you can get a 12+1 month card for $40 typically (if you look around), then it comes out to $3 a month, which is a far cry from $10.

Recent thread on PS3:
what can you do with a PS3 ??

If you want to play PS2 games you need the $500 80GB PS3 model. It comes with blu-ray, wifi, 1 controller, motorstorm game, 5 blu-ray movies by mail.

For a HDTV, you need to buy (any) $10 HDMI cable or a Sony $20 component cable pack (only a composite cable is packed in). If you have a PS2 component cable that will work too.

The xbox 360 "Go Pro" pack at $350 includes a controller, Marvel UA and Forza 2. It comes with component cables but does not include wifi or HD-DVD. Just buy Xbox Live Gold for $40-50 and you're set for gaminng (but not HD movies).

Right now the $180 HD-DVD add-on comes with Heroes season 1 plus movies so it might be good to buy now instead of at xmas if you want HD-DVD.

The 360 game library is much stronger unless you count PS2 games. For shared games the 360 version is usually a little better and there are a lot more 360 exclusive games right now. Xmas 2008 might be a better time to get a PS3 for just gaming.

If you care enough to set up a DLNA server on your computer and it's not by your TV, the PS3 can be the client and do all the normal stuff. Software for PS3 is really starting to pick up so that's a plus. It can use just about any USB mouse and keyboard.

Basically they are the same, just come down to games. They both have/will have great games. And only the new 40gig PS3 has NO backwards compatibility, all the others are fine. Although the 60 gig version still seems to be the best model to have since it actually has the Emotion Engine in it, instead of software emulation for PS2 games.

Other than playing great games on my 360, it works great as a space heater! I keep mine on the floor and it heats up my living room rather nicely. 🙂 cuts down on my gas-heat bill.

I can only speak to the 360.

I use it only about 50% for games. The rest of the time I use it to stream my video library (Divx, Xvid, WMV, etc. ) from my computer to my TV. I do this through a third party program (TVersity) installed on my PC, no Xbox modding required . I also use the Marketplace feature to occasionally rent movies, purchase TV shows, check out trailers, and download demos.

blu rays, used tversity for a while, then decided it was not worth the hassle, hooked up a pc to my hdtv and that is a million times better, plays everything. the ps3 is good for blu rays and some warhawk, thas about it

I use my 360 as a music extender for the family room. While playing games, I can stream music from my media server or just plug my iPod into the front of the 360 and access and listen to the music in-game. Pretty cool. I've also streamed tunes while not gaming.

any new updates/ packages expected between now and say jan 08? has rumors or anything been annouced yet?
