I want to build a new PC, but I have to sell my old one first. I need themoney from the old one into the new one.
I was about to put it in the classifieds, but then I started thinking...
Why would someone want this old PC?? They could easily go out and get a brand new one for a little more money and also get tech support and a warranty.

Well anyways... I was just wondering what you do with your old PCs.

BTW, just in case you were wondering, here is my PC....I was thinkin of sellin it for $500.
AMD 1.33Ghz, Epox 8K7A, 512MB PC2100, 40Gig IBM HD, SB Live! Value, Geforce2 GTS, 16X Pioneer DVD, 12x10x32 TEAC CDRW, 3 1/4" floppy, 10/100 Linksys NIC, 56K V.90 modem
*NOTE: This is not an advirtisement. (Unless you really want it...lol ;) )

Old 233mhz used to be a linux router.

I use my 450mhz to browse the internet and screw around if my main machine is occupied.

Sheesh, put up a WTB thread, you big baby. :p Even my backup rig is faster than you (C500/320/10GB)

My point exactly! :p

I don't really have any money to buy anything new anyway, unless it was insane cheap(hint hint;)).

I have been looking at brand new K7S5A Pro's on eBay, though. Can get them for around 40$, and if I found one local I wouldn't have to pay shipping...

I could potentially build a system for about 100$.. Of course, this is using 256megs of the PC133 ram I have, and my rusty old Creative Labs RivaTNT1.

I asked my brother to ask around his high school to see if any kids were interested. Apparently there turned out to be a few, but he said they said that they didn't have the money right now.
Who knows, maybe some kid might actually come up with some dough...

Sorry to disappoint you, but noone will buy it for $500. The point of buying old PCs is their low cost.
Let's see... I think it's cost is somewhere in the $250 area at best, that's the money it could easily sell for.

<--- I beg you pardon if you got offended with the lower cost assumption.

Still lightyears ahead of me. :p I'm not a gamer(well, maybe a game of quake3 a month.. I can play at 800x600x16!! :p), so I don'r really care about my old crusty video card..

Maybe by the end of the summer I'll have enough to buy a nice nForce2 board and a cheap AthlonXP... Would be a hell of an upgrade.

I have a Compaq PIII 700Mhz that I don't know what to do with. It's a great internet PC but that's about it. Durable as hell.

Are you nuts?? I said I need the money from this PC to put into the parts I want for the one I want to build.
And I when I say "want" I mean "want". I know I don't need a new PC. The one I have now is fine and it does everything I need to do. But I want it to do more. I want to be able to play Unreal 2003 higher than 800x600. I want to be able to run it with higher than "normal" detail. I want to be able to play current and future games.....

lol....maybe I'm just a greedy little ba$tard.....lol

whats wrong with that system? throw in a high end video card and its pretty much same as what i have....are there things you _can't_ do with that that a new system could? (given replacing the video card)

My old PCs (i.e. Pentium class systems) sit around idly until I decide if I want to pull off any data for archival (honestly, that's unlikely).

Since I don't think any public schools still take obsolete PCs anyway, I guess I'll eventually have to pay to properly recycle them. That's still better than dumping it in a landfill, or having it end up in some Chinese village where they use hammers and bare hands to rip motherboards apart for salvage. :| (Just imagine the lead content in their water supply.)

Even if I could sell your machine to some dope for $500, I wouldn't do it. A) it's just not a fair price considering you can get a (no-frills) brand-new Dell 2.5 GHz system for around that much after rebate. And B) I'd have to support that PC for its lifetime.

Yeah, but my computer is a POS. I'm afraid to shut it off because half the time I spend an hour trying to get it to boot successfully after a complete power down, the CD burner crapped out a long time ago, blah blah blah. At least it still runs the basic apps and I can still burn up the Intarweb. ;)

Even that video card's not horrible. I have 2 friends that game on a lesser machine than that.

I don't know if there is anything I can't do with it. It has been able to do everything I have "asked" it to do so far.

Jeesh, you guys are making me feel bad. Maybe I should just keep it and upgrade a few components...lol

If you want to build a new one, do it.
But if you just want a boost in games, just upgrade the video card.
The CPU is still fast enough to handle most games.

A $200 video card would give you a big improvement.

How's the PSU on that old one?

You could keep the case and PSU and all your drives, and just replace the mobo/cpu/RAM/video.
That would pretty much get you a new PC and save you some money.

I've got an Athlon XP1700+ with GF3 Ti200 and it is "old"
I'm really ready to build a new one to replace my 1 yr old ancient pc.
I want to be able to run HL2 and Doom at high res and detail.

If you are a gamer, 1 year old really is ancient.
