What do you do with your GPS when you leave the car?

Just curious as to what people do when they leave their car.

Do you take the GPS with you?
Leave it on it's holder on the dash?
Stick it in the glove box or center console area?
Something else?

Also how susceptible to freezing are the screens? I'm in WI and we can have stretches of days where it's in the 20s or lower. And if the car doesn't get used for a day, it will definitely get damn cold in there.

Could the screen freeze (I've seen it on laptops) and then shatter when you turn it on (also seen this on laptops).

If possible, don't leave it in the car. Extreme heat and cold are also hazardous to the well being of LCDs.

You don't. Do you really expect people to dismantle and uninstall a factory fitted Sat Nav every time they park up? :laugh:

Leave it on until need to be charged haven't cause me any issue.
About LCD shatter under extreme cold condition may not be so common. I used to live in East coast where I park my car outside of the house, many times for weeks under winter condition w/out driving and factory LCD command center screen never have problem.
 
I think old LCDs were more susceptible. Totally just my observations, but that's how it seems to me. I live in MN and I leave mine in the car - we get quite a bit colder than you in WI usually, and I'm not worrying about it.
 
I have never heard or seen of an LCD screen cracking in the cold. I have a carpc with a 7inch touchscreen and so far it has been stored and operated just fine down to -20C. However, you might worry about the CCFL backlight dying prematurely if you operate it below freezing. I have read two separate engineering articles which did tests showing that a typical CCFL tube which is rated for ~25k hours only lasts 400-500 hours at 0C, which kind of scares me. Storing the GPS unit in the cold should be fine. I would be more worried about getting your car broken into with a GPS unit exposed publicly.
