What do you do with your dirty shoes?

Right after someone opens the door to my place, they'll meet carpet. Unfortunately this means that there's no place for an entry mat (if I were to put one down, it'd get moved by the door every time it's opened. So basically, what I'm looking for is a place where people can put dirty shoes when they come in so the carpet won't get dirty (outside isn't really an option). Also, how difficult would it be to cut out a section of carpeting and put down some linoleum or tile?

Suggestions? What do you do with dirty shoes in your place?

Do you own your home?
If so, plz provide pics of your entry way so we can imagine how tiles/lino would look. Surplus Marble Tiles can be had on the cheap, about a $1 a piece and they look awesome !

We put our shoes on the carpet right by the door. Nobody ever sees it since it's right behind the recliner so it's not a big deal it gets dirty.

I don't have a digicam, but a tile entryway would look great, trust me. However, can I just buy a home improvement book and rip up some carpet, or do I need some sort of subfloor in order to move from a small area of carpet to a small area of tile?

Both vinyl or tile wouldn't be too difficult.

Vinyl a 4 X 5 area would probably take a day cost less than $50.

But, a nice mud room tile is forever. If the floor under this area is stable, tile would take a couple days(first to set, then to grout). Cost wouldn't be too bad, less than $150 unless you pick something exotic.

As for stability, what kind of flooring is under this area. You need 1 1/8" of subfloor under tile. You raise up the area with cement backer board. It comes in 1/8" or 1/4".

I'm no expert.

no, there should be no problem. just rip up carpet/padding and then do your stuff. a book should be enough.
