What do you do with old systems/hardware?

So I'll be upgrading at the end of the summer and I'm not quite sure what to do with my old system. None of it is really reusable (1.9ghz (willamette) p4, 2x256mb pc800 RDRAM, gf2 mx 64mb) as I plan on building an amd gaming rig. Now I was wondering what you guys do with your old stuff when you do a full system upgrade. Do you give it to a friend/family member? Try to sell the parts? Let it sit in your office forever? Gimme some ideas of what to do with it, if I can't figure anything out I'll probably just let my gf use it.

With a comp like that, you could try selling the whole thing on ebay. I live with my folks though so I always have a recepticle for all my junk 🙂. Usually if I have any valuable stuff it goes on the for sale board or ebay, my parents just get the junk 🙂.

If it is your only system and you are upgrading, then I council you to keep it. Should your new system have a problem at some point it's good to have a back-up to use while awaiting RMA returns, ect. Besides, you can turn the present one into a firewall, file server, or even a HTPC for cheap should you wish.

I've got five rigs between 2100+ and Athlon 1.1Ghz, I just move old hardware down the line. Seems to work well.

In the order I follow:

1) Keep a second machine around while the new system is set up, tweaked, and broken in. It's always good to have a back up system.

2) Trickle down old machines to family and friends

3) Set up a Linux server

4) Give to charity

You can also sell some of the more valuable parts that are either too valuable to sit around or are not needed in any of the above.

Nobody mentioned the most noble option:

send it to my charity foundation.

Email me, check my sig. Any decent, complete rigs and will pay for cost of shipping. They all go to local afterschool community center.

Mine in correct order is 1,2,4, I don`t bother with 3 😉.

I sell to my company if I can.. they can always use decent machines like that for order entry/email.

if they don't sell here, I ask around, and last resort is eBay.

Ironically, I do 1,2,3 but not 4. 😀

A 1.9GHz P4 not usable for anything!!?!?? WTF dude.

lol I have 4 pcs atm.

-Game rig (2500 xp)
-FTP/HTTP rig (2400 xp)
-Work Rig (PIII 600)
-Doing nothing rig (PIII 600)

The work rig and doing nothing rig I am selling soon. 4 PCs is 2 too many. 2 PCs is perfect. If one craps up you have anouther to fall back on. I leave my FTP on 24/7 and the game rig is on only when I want to play.

So if you want to setup a server or something that PC is perfect. Its always good to have a PC that is for general use. That way you don't have to crud up your game rig with crap you would never use for gaming.

lol. Yeah, that' exactly what I was thinking. How in the world can you call a 1.9GHz P4 not usable for anything!? I was using a 600 MHz Duron until a few months ago and for a lot of what I do, the upgrade to an Athlon XP 2200 was not that big of a deal. To say a 1.9GHz P4 not usable for anything is absolutely ridiculous.

I don't recall saying it was unusable. I only said it was not reusable, there's a difference. Since I use my computer mainly for gaming, I will be replacing it with a new computer this summer. Since I'm replacing it, I no longer have to use it. I know it's far from unusable since I've been doing all my general purpose stuff and gaming on it for the past 3 or 4 years. However it really doesn't have any upgrade potential since it only has agp 2x, takes rdram, and I plan on getting an amd rig anyways. So in terms of new games, my system isn't really usable.

give it to me 🙂

just sell the parts off to recoup a little if you don't need a secondary system. or sell it cheap to a friend who needs it.

Either I put some of the parts into another system in the house that can use an upgrade or another drive, or else it goes to FS/T. Or you can give it to someone you know who can use it. The only time I ever throw away parts is if they're dead - and even then, depending on the age, they might be bought up (really cheaply though) by salvagers in FS/T.

When you say complete rig, do you mean cpu, monitor, etc... or just a cpu?

I've got like 3 comps laying around that nobody uses, I just set one up in my basement for an "IM machine" haha. There's always a use, and there's always ebay

Complete as in cpu box so that no expense on them to buy needed cards. Other people just donate monitors to pair up with the complete box, like I did when I gave them 17" crt a few months back.

Cool thing is that this community center is funded by the township and not by a church/religious institution or related to any big charity foundations.....so it's pretty dependent on the townsfolk.

There are a number of over-65 folks in my apartment building living on limited incomes. I've given away two complete systems to a couple of senior citizens who just wanted to try word processing and the internet (usually for the 1st time in their lives). Both systems are now dead, but several people were able to enjoy them for a number of years.

it would be a good game server if you are so inclined and have the bandwidth. Otherwise, I would ebay it. That is a decent box. You may also be able to sell it whole on the boards, but ebay will often fetch more cash.

Heh I could set it up as a CS: Source server once that comes out, bandwidth is not a problem where I am (MIT), they got oc-12 and they don't cap anything =P
