what do you do when your default email "program" is webmail?

if you use google mail or yahoo mail or hotmail or even aol webmail, how do you make it so clicking on an email link pops open a webpage with your webmail?

the only way ive found to do it usually involves installing a messenger or toolbar... for example if i install google toolbar, or yahoo messenger then yahoo mail or gmail will show up in Internet Options -> Programs and you can select it as your default mail "program"

to me this seems like a gross way to accomplish something that should be much simpler (i dont want to install yahoo messenger or google toolbar for instance) and is only a specific solution for some specific webmails. isnt there a more general solution for any webmail?

I use my ISP's webmail at home and lotus notes at work, any time I want to send an email I just type in the email address.

It's quicker to type in an email address than to move the mouse. Requiring me to take a hand off of the keyboard and onto the mouse to click a link is a PITA.
