What do you do when you can't sleep?

Last night I laid awake for hours, dunno why. Drank 3 glasses of wine. I eventually dozed off, not sure if the wine did it. I slept for 3 freaking hours. I feel like a zombie. What are your remedies (counting sheep excluded)?

I put on some music and just listen. Seems like if I let my mind just wander on it's own, I just end up thinking too much. But if I have something to focus on, I seem to zone out easier.

Haven't tried sleeping pills, but I'll have a beer or two and watch some Married with Children (just picked up Season 7 on DVD).

I've read that if you try to relax it helps. Start down at your toes and concentrate and then work your way up, relaxing your muscles.

I just take sleeping pills.

I pop a couple benadryl and get knocked the eff out. That or gravol seems to do the trick.

(I never really have trouble sleeping and haven't had to do this for years, though)

What's sad is when you take sleeping pills, and just feel more tired without falling asleep... I get in states where my mind starts racing, and nothing helps. It's been so bad a couple of times that I've called in to work the next morning to take the day off.

I have trouble falling asleep (at night) when it's too hot. At those times, I drop the AC a few degrees. (Strangely, I can fall asleep on the couch, in the middle of the day, with the sun hitting me with no problems, but I always wake up feeling terrible)

If I'm just not tired, then I'll turn the tv on to something boring or play solitaire on my computer.

I take Ambien CR every night @ 2000. One of 6 pills I take every day.

You might try one of the natural herbal remidies for sleeplessness, especially if you only need to take them every once in a while.

By the way, alcohol does not produce good sleep, because it essentially prevents you from REM sleep.

tylenol PM

Tylenol makes a thing called "Tylenol Simply Sleep" which has the same effective ingredient for sleeping that is in Tylenol PM, but it doesn't have the tylenol in it. It is safer to take regularly and less damaging on your liver as you aren't taking Tylenol unnecessarily.

I'll usually get up and bum around on the computer for awhile. What seems to be most effective for me, though, is reading a chapter or two out of whatever book I'm working on. It helps take my mind off of whatever thoughts have been keeping me up.
