What do you do/used to do with your summer vacations?

Up until I was probably a sophomore in high school, I spent most of my summers skateboarding at least five or six hours a day with all of my friends. Before I picked up skateboarding in 8th grade, I mostly played video games or goofed off with my neighbors (they were all in my class) playing hide and seek, basketball, tennis, whatever.

Sometimes if we were lucky, our parents took us on a vacation. We've been to the Black Hills, went over and kayaked through the Royal Gorge, visited the Southwest (AZ, NM), and even went to Disney World when I was a freshman in high school. Multitudes of other places I can't even remember...Ozarks, Minnesota, Wyoming... We didn't do vacations ALL of the time, though, because my brother is/was really emotionally unstable. He would lash out at me sometimes, and that caused my parents to keep us separated most of our lives.

Now, summer vacation for me means summer class and probably 40 hour work weeks. I sure do miss being a kid, sometimes.

both my parents worked for the UN. they have a policy where you get 2.5 days off per month you work and you could carry over the days to subsequent years. so every other year they would take off 2 months and take us to the philippines to visit their families. on the way we would visit LA (disney), SF, hawaii, Japan, Vegas, and several places in the philippines. on the off years, i would go biking around town with friends, play baseball, soccer, football, basketball, go fishing, the arcade. good times.

now i work. just like the other 45 weeks of the year :)

Don't just vacation in the summer, but I camp in all sorts of places. Go hiking, snowshoeing, etc.

I spend 4 or 5 days a week at the pool or the lake. My two days off for sure, and also on days that I get out of work at 2PM, leaving me plenty of sun time.

I play more basketball (outdoors) and since I have friends still in college they come back into town to hang out more. That means more late nights at 24 hour joints.

I also like to sprinkle in a trip to South Padre Island and a nice vacation to some beach, hoping for Hawaii this year.

in this order of priority through the first 3 years of high school:

1)scheming to get pussy with zero to negative results
2)jerking it up to and past the point of getting a headache
3)playing videogames (ff's, sf's, vf2, tomb raider, panzer dragoon's) for marathon time periods whilst consuming 2 liters of either mountain dew or surge
4)listening to am sports talk radio
5)finding places to swim
6)obtaining cigarettes

Lately not much of anything, sometimes go to my parent's camp and hang out at the lake.

I still do some late night downtown skate sessions once in a while with some of my friends, nothing too heavy, usually just bomb a hill or look for a ledge to skate. It's fun being in the middle of the city on a late summer night when drunks are wandering around.

In high school? Playing video games, watching TV, swimming, going on the occasionally road trip with dad. College, I either did summer classes or worked/looked for work.

In junior high and high school, my summers were:

In no real order..

Wiffle ball with friends.
Swimming.
All night Quake 1 Team Fortress sessions (this was a nightly thing).
5 or 6 of us staying up all night in my friend's basement, playing PS2, and gorging ourselves on pizza and soda.
Spending hours at the arcade that I worked at (free games for all).
Riding my bike all over the place
Not having a single fucking responsibility in the world.

Miss those days a lot.

Nice to know there is another (ex)skater on the forum. I still try to at least go out a few times a year and really get a good skate in. When I moved to college, most of my skating friends were younger and still in high school. So, I sort of quit skateboarding as time went on because class and other things were occupying my time. I think one of my promises (New Years resolution?) to myself this year was to get out and skate more.

Wow, what a child hood dream. Working in an arcade!!! We had one here in our VERY small town, and unfortunately, it had to close due to lack of business. I was in there so often, always playing this Simpsons game and of course 1942.

Most of my summers were spent either at public school summer school (which was very camp-like), sleep-away camp or driving from the Bay Area to visit family in Southern California (Disneyland!) or Denver.

When I was really young, before I was old enough to go to summer school, I went to the free summer camp at the nearby Church. Throughout the summer, they would teach the stories of the Bible in order. I knew the first five books of the Bible (which we call the Torah) pretty well, but once they got past that, I was lost. Nonetheless, it was fun and they were not too preachy about things, which gave me an appreciation of people of other religions from a young age.

rent beach cottages at misc spots up and down the coast for a week or so. most of which we had to book back in february/march.

renting a house/cottage is waaaaay better than a hotel room imho.

Worked and played with my band.

Best thing about summer vacation back then was that i hated school and it was such a huge relief to put it out of my mind for a while.

Sat at home, found a new series to watch on TV, then watched reruns daily. Wow, I wasted some good years...

Hell yeah...sometimes even way more cost effective. Makes you look real cool when you're pickin' up ladies...

Spent almost every day in my room during the summer after I was 10. I did have to be babysat sometimes (It was more so just a thing to give money to a fellow neighborhood gal who was nice). Before that, there was stuff planned for me or I was at some daycare place or whatever... I never needed to be taken care of, and so after I was 11 or so I just stayed in my room almost all day and played games or surfed the internet.

That was essentially all I did. I lived in a small town(Sub 5000 in the greater area) where most kids were pricks and had drug addicts/alcoholics for parents. (And the parents were shitty people to begin with)
