What do you do if Vista will not let you use your mouse or keyboard?

So I get the "install devices" pop up every time I boot into Vista. The problem is, I cannot install them because I cannot use my mouse or keyboard to select okay!

I've tried using at least 3 other mouse n keyboard (both USB and non-USB/p2)

What am I supposed to do? this is crazy. Any genius ideas?

I would start by checking the BIOS settings (above Vista) - then move to a boot with the Vista DVD and do a repair install.

This happens when the OS needs drivers for a device it found before it detected your keyboard first.

The trick (which existed in XP too) is to press reset at this point. Next time you boot, the driver installer will skip the device it was trying to install. Repeat until it gets to detecting the keyboard first, then revisit Device Manager and install those skipped drivers manually.

Doesn't work...

Plus you can't install drivers for generic devices. THERE ARE NONE. Other than what should already be in windows, but for some reason windows keeps deleting them (I think).

I sometimes get this problem with winxp installs as well.
Try to unplug the device and then re-plug it while in windows.
Sometimes that makes it re-detect the device.
Also try a different port while windows is loaded.

BIOS Are fine. I know my p5n-e like the back of my hand. If it were BIOS then it would be affecting XP too (I dual boot and it doesnt)

Those are the first things I tried. no luck. I've probably unplugged and replugged all over hundreds of times lol.

I think a usb-ps2 converter should be provided with all usb keyboards or all mobos that have ps2 on them.

Don't you?

If you can get hold of a temporary ps2 kb, try that a couple of times, and with a bit of luck, you'll be able to go back to your USB kb in a couple of boots.

What kind of keyboard/mouse are you using?
I would try booting with only a keyboard and see if you get get past the login screen that way. If you get in, plug in the mouse. Make sure that you are plugging the keyboard and mouse in the same ports every time you boot. If you switch the ports that your keyboard or mouse were plugged into it will think that you have a new piece of hardware (this is the case in XP at least).

If nothing works, the reinstall game may be in order :D

I have tried 3 different keyboards and mice, including ps2 and no luck.

Try a Vista repair install using the Vista DVD.
